"aero" non aero helmets...

...and does it matter? Partial full disclosure...not an uber-biker. Dont ride an aero bike, don't use aero wheels, and don't have the best aero position. I just need a new helmet and figured if I had to get one anyway, why not. So...the forum is yours.

If you believe the marketing machine at Specialized, their new Prevail helmet has an edge on all other "non" aero helmets. Link: http://www.bikerumor.com/...d-highly-adjustable/

How about a Lazer Helium or Genesis with the optional snap on "weather cover"?

I wonder how that would test out against a Prevail...

I like specialized and giro. One thing to keep in mind using a "road" helmet is the webbing/loc system inside the helmet. Some models have a semi-rigid system that keeps the webbing/loc system in an oval shape while other models have a non-rigid system. The reason why this is important to keep in mind is T1. With the semi-rigid, you can just flip the helmet up onto your head, latch and go. With the non-rigid, you have to take the time to make sure the webbing/loc system goes around your head and doesn't get caught up on top of your head. This is probably more important for women who race with a pony tail.

I was actually thinking about this the other day. It seems to me like these new 'uber light' helmets have a lot more frontal area. I wonder how this affects their aerodynamics.

You can get ~1/2 the benefit of an aero helmet just by plugging the vents in your typical high-end (i.e. lots of vents) helmet.

Personally I used to stretch a swim cap over the helmet. Now I race with the LG Chrono which is a minimalist aero lid.

+1

I saw a guy @ the LA Velodrome with one of the Flanders lids, looks like a great option and Lazer helmets are very comfortable.

When I think about the "aero" properties of super vented road helmet, I flash back to using a whiffle ball for batting practice when I was a kid.

In my opinion, without science to back it up, the helmet that felt the most aero to me was my Giro Eclipse.

That's compared to a Bell Sweep and Laser Genesis.

It certainly did not let as much air through as the other two helmets.

i'd say take any normal road helmet and tape the front vents: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/...ring=helmet;#2891808

If you tape the vents don't you loose the upside of a non aero helmet therefore you may as well just use a regular aero helmet. Assuming you have one.
