Hey Ken, is that from the crit in Wisconsin this weekend? There were 3 or 4 ugly, ugly crashes. In one, the dude when sideways into a mailbox. He went flying and the bike "wrapped" around the mailbox pole, bending it, then snapping it in half (the bike, not the pole). It looks like this is the bike (or very similar). The rider was ok (except for road rash and bruising). He picked up the two pieces of his bike and was carrying them back toward the finish line. Looked just like this.

No, this is (er, was) the bike of one of the top cyclists in NJ. He was leading the pack at the finish of the 1/2 road race, with two of his teammates having broken away and already won, when some bozo came up on his right and did a Cat V move and took him down. No injuries other than some road rash on an arm, but he says his 808 front is toast, too (along with his helmet and his glasses).

WOW. That is extremely fortunate! He's "lucky", that's for sure...

Looks almost identical to the breakage we would see on CF canoe paddles... very strong when used as designed and snap like a glass rod with point/shear loads.

I'm no expert, but it looks like his frame might be broke also. He should have a mechanic look at it to be sure.

Glad he is okay.

I've seen a CAAD8 aluminum bike snap like that too, except the top tube broke completely off. Impact is a nasty deal - E

A Cat V move is kind of like chasing some woman and her dog up a hill screaming about poop.

Running into and taking down a rider while passing when said rider is going straight down the middle of the road.

Interesting. So, if that is a Cat V move, what is a Cat 1 move?

So, Dave, are you going to start a new thread titled "Why Cat 5 cyclists, and therefore their bikes, have reputations" ?

I did the exact same thing to my Kestrel Talon in a race at the end of April. Broke the frame exactly the same. My clavicle also looked the same after the accident. Not sure what hurt more, the broken $2000 carbon bike I had to replace or the broken clavicle I had to have put back together with a plate and six screws. :-(

Actually it's the same but making it look like their fault.
