If anyone comes flying by you in a *race* and someone says something like that to motivate you, chances are you're never going to catch them unless:

a) You're coming out of T1 fumbling with your shoes or something.
b) You're in the last 100-200m of the run and you're able to surge to the line.

That person is just plain faster than you.

If you're on a training ride/run however, and you're just kind of dicking around and someone comes flying by and says something, then I think that can be used as kind of a carrot to go a little harder. If you're in a race and you try to catch up, chances are you're going to blow your load and screw up the rest of your race.

Never thought of putting it that way, but the last sentence pretty much sums it up. So I guess I could say "I'm glad I didn't blow my load... um, in front of everyone." haha
