"Cadel not a hero" says Australian woman
Everyone should watch this.

An Australia woman (I don't know, must be a popular blogger or something) on a morning talk show, saying she doesn't care about Cadel's win, doesn't think he is a hero etc.

"Did he save anyone's life?"

Watch here

this is what we get when we encourage people with no talent for thinking, to think. and then put them on tv.

every 10 year old with an IQ to the right side of the bell curve has already had the "are sports champions really heroes" debate, in grade school.

surely she isn't as dumb as she came across. Really - is she that stupid.

She was certainly put in her place.

this perspective from tina is a much better represtentation of what a non-sporting person can take from the victory:

At first I thought she was simply saying 'sports' stories don't merit hero status as she reflected on social workers and other careers. But then she lost her cool and started making statements like 'well he doesn't even live in Australia'. Yes honey, cycling takes place in other locales than the Outback. Her parting 'I don't even know much about Cadel really' was the perfect ending. I have a feeling the Aussies are embracing her like a case of herpes.

Well said:

I looked her up - she is a lowly social commentator. She used to be an editor of a girls magazine.

Maybe we should question why the fuck she thinks she should get paid just to write her opinions on bullshit topics like what style of dress is in fashion. She isn't saving any lives.

What a pathetically poor perspective and understanding as to why sports stars get the money they do.

Socialism/Communism or whatever doesn't work because we don't want it to work - we are happy to pay our sports stars that much. If they weren't worth it, nobody would pay it.

I agree in principle that the market in sports will pay what the market will bear. The trouble is that many team sports owners are corporate welfare recipients when it comes to facilities. Cycling is a little different, when a local government repaves a road to host a stage the town or city get to use it afterwards.

If you were a ratepayer in Glendale, Arizona you might think differently about wages in pro sports.

+1. While Tony Martin won the TT, I thought Cadel's performance was awe inspiring..I don't think he missed a move on that course at all. Very 'Spartacus'-ish..

cheers

there is a saying in Aus, not sure elsewhere in the world:

If you give someone enough rope - they'll eventually hang themselves.

I think that is what the bloke did to this ditz in the interview - just kept feeding her and letter her do the talking until she hung herself with her own stupidity.

Well, in the grand scheme of things he's not a hero. People who win the Medal of Honor are heroes. People like Nelson Mandela and the guy standing in front of the tank are heores.

Cadel Evans won a difficult sporting event, perhaps the most difficult ever, but that's the extent of his heorics...well, and marrying a smokin hot opera singer.

Well, that's an empty feeling, at least for me. I can't relate. Sounds quite narcissistic....

Anyway, Cadel Evans is one hell of an athlete. Let's hope no drug rumors or scandals taints his victory. He seems like a wonderful fellow. The chick in the video is a complete ditz, btw.

Did not watch the clip, but most sports personalities (and for that matter, people in general) aren't heroes. The word gets thrown around a little too loosely. Don't know what Cadel does in his spare time off the bike, but it takes someone like Roberto Clemente, who would spend his offseasons doing charity work and died in a crash getting supplies for earthquake victims, to get hero status in my book. Or someone like Pat Tillman. Look up "athlete" and "hero" and those are the types of pictures you'll find.

i dont think anyone in the video mentioned "hero". the host said stuff like "Australia's greatest sporting achievement" and repeatedly emphasized his accolades were given from a sporting aspect. that said, OBVIOUS TROLL IS OBVIOUS. maybe she never learnt how to ride a bike as a kid.

Sports Hero, he was referred to as a Sports Hero. Very different connotation as "Hero." He did something heroic in the sporting context. No thinking person is claiming Cadel, MJ, Tom Brady or any other athlete is a Hero. Sheesh people...do you just like to argue for the sake of it?
