"But the paper said it was a Triathlon!"
Working the bike course yesterday at the Philly Tri, a guy walked up to me and asked if this was the Ironman. When I said this was the Philly Tri, he asked me where they would run the marathon. I told him it was an Olympic distance race.

"But the paper said it was a Triathlon!"

He seemed very upset.

I'm sure that "Ironman 70.3" will do wonders to solve this age old problem. No worries!

It's like being at family gatherings and some jackass relative asks, "are you still doing those decathlon, marathon things" as their pot belly hangs over their belt. Then you tell them, OH you mean triathlons, they say, "yea, are you doing the full distance ones?"..

Yeah... just like triathletes are dumbasses for not knowing what kinds of boats are raced in the America's Cup... or what match racing is...

That was your first mistake ... don't try to inform or educate.

The difference is I don't say" are you doing those jet boat, sail boat races" I don't care so I don't ask.

Yeah, everyone thinks I do marathons as well. It's kind of discouraging after your first triathlon when your entire family is like "What you did was great, but now you don't have to work out as much anymore and you can have a normal life again." It's troublesome that people that are suppose to be supportize of me don't realize that this isn't a one time thing with me.

Wrong analogy... and he did care, so he's one up on you...

He doesn't care, just making the general chit chat to make time go by at family gatherings. Like when you see somebody in a store and you say, "how ya doing" you really don't care how they are doing, you just say it as way to get on with your business and be polite.

This one gets me, too. My wife always tells me she wants me to be "normal" again. I think I've figured out the code, though. This just means "Hey... Give ME some attention, you selfish ASS!"

In the tone of now referring to half ironman's as "Ironman 70.3" we should continue the trend. Sprints should be called "Ironman 16.0", Olympics are now "Ironman 32.0"

For running the 10K is now a "Marathon 6.2", a 5K is now a "Marathon 3.1" and the 50 metre dash is now a "Marathon 0.003"

In cycling a 40K time trial is now a "Century 24.9"

Yeah, I have a co-worker who refers to all the olympic distance races I do as "oh, did you do one of those mini triathlons again this weekend?" This coming from a person who does no type of physical exercise yet thinks he is in the best shape of everyone around him. To add to this, he refers to all women as "kiddo".

actually kiddo, I always thought it was a little weird that a sprint tri should take over an hour to complete!

This weekend, I did an Ironman 3.1 on Saturday and volunteered at an Ironman 6.2 on Sunday!

Ahh yes, another thinly-disguised triathlete superiority complex thread.

My mother still asks me, "So how long was 'this' marathon?"

It doesn't really bother me, it just is.

Then did he say Olympic, I didn't know the Olympics were going on :-)!

Most people don't realize there are different lengths of triathlons but, then, why should they know. Many people don't know the difference between a marathon and a triathlon. Why should outsiders be expected to know the difference?

The one that gets me is people who drive a Bimmer and think it’s a Beemer.

2nd that. I always crack up when I have to repeat to my relatives, "nooo, not a decathlonnnnn". As popular as you may think the sport has grown, many people do not know about Tri's. Not a big deal. And FWIW, when I was younger I only knew about ironman until I actually saw an Oly on home turf.

Dumbest question I get asked consistantly is "Didcha win?"

That's always the first question my 5 year old asks. Me: "Heck yeah, I finished and got a t shirt (or medal) and everything." Allie: "You're the best Mommy" Me: "Yes I am, thanks for noticing"......kj
