Speaking of water....

Why do they not use that giant pool for aerobic exercise? Judging by the number of injuries (2 ppl. couldn't participate last night due to knee problems) I would think the trainers would add some low impact water workouts.

I was amazed that in the first episode they had to run to the top of a hill and back down. I was waiting for face plants, chest clutching, and mass collapsing. I hope these folks had gone through some sort of base fitness program before being subjected to that.

I'm not sure if they went through a pre-condition phase or not, but they do go through a full medical exam to minimize the risk of massive cardiac arrest in the first few minutes!

And I agree with you, water workouts would make a heck of a lot of sense for the participants, especially in the beginning when they weigh the most and are the least trained.

Am I the only surprised by how badly Bob kicked Jillian's ass on the escalator? He didn't look winded and she looked like she was going to keel over. It wasn't even close.

I suppose, since it is a weight-loss competition, they could be avoiding the pool to prevent absorption via osmosis. That would be just that much more water to shed in the "last chance" workout.

I can't quite remember from chemistry class if the human body has a higher or lower concentration of minerals than tap/pool water. I believe we are lower than salt water and fluids will flow out of us in the ocean.

Water loss. I wrestled in college and once lost 10 pounds in 25 hours.

I was surprised by this. If she was a trooper she would have finished all 10, but I don't even think she was capable -- she was struggling to keep pace with the escalator at the end.

It would be interesting to try that. It did look challenging but she shouldn't have cratered THAT hard.

they have to eat something to keep the ol metabolism rolling. I suspect weight potentially rolls off in larger quantities for 300lb peeps. Water, whatever weight. How about the guy that gained 3 lbs.?

Let us not forget these people are essentially professional weight losers. It's their job while they are there. Seems a little screwey to be adding weight. Sneaking out for a late night KFC run?
Big people do lose tons of weight fast. I went from 405 to 300 in less than 6 months, like clock work it it was 4 to 8 pounds a week.

The very first season, they did both weight loss and body fat for the finale. IIRC the women were very far behind - the guys could put on much more muscle mass. (I'm sad that I know this next bit...) It seems to me that the last 2-3 seasons have been closer between men and women just relying on % weight lost. The season where there was a contestant from every state (2006 ?), a woman from New Jersey I believe, lost more than 50% of her weight. That was record breaking, until one of the four finalists that year lost even more than she did.

IMO gameplay may be the most likely way for a woman to win.

I was surprised, because she took off pretty fast, then got shelled after like 3 trips up. I think her "guns" and muscles and general rip-ness make a great show / body, but I'm not sure she is really cardio-fit.

Then again what do I know. As a single woman over 40, with that tremendous amount of debt, baggage, education, etc I've accumulated (according to some guys!), it probably preclude my ability to have a rational thought. :)

I hear part of those people's workouts include 3 hours of walking on the treadmill every day. So it isn't all high-intensity exercise.

Exactly. Maybe they should have arm wrestled instead. That would have been a more even fight.

Now stop watching TV and get out there and find "Mr. Right".

um, the escalator challenge was for the TRAINERS, not the show contestants?!?!?

hehehe. the good news is i have!

the bad news is (well at least for him), even after 3 years, he STILL hasn't figured out about the mountain of credit card debt, trainload of emotional baggage, the raging alcohol / meth / habit, former life as a porn star, you know, all those traits we single girls over what?, 23?, must possess because, after all, we wouldn't be single unless there was something seriously wrong with us.

Keep in mind there's also gamesmanship involved -- Dan, the guy who lost 13 lbs, "threw" the weigh in the previous week by drinking a bunch of water. They were trying to get the black team eliminated, but it backfired.

So that 13 lbs may actually be more like 6.5 lbs per week over 2 weeks, or over 20 days if the inputs about a "week" on the show being 10 days are accurate.

Thanks
Jeff

There were 2 challenges. First the trainers then the contestants.

IMO, the people on the black team were a bunch of pansies and abandoned that one girl (name?). She has more guts than the rest combined.

I hate the method they use on that show (i.e., weight only). I realize this would be a lot harder to measure, but, they should go by body fat percentage. Weight alone simply is not an accurate measure of fitness.

Plus, I do not understand why the guy trainer (sorry, do not know his name) does so much weight training in his final workout. Why not do all cardio and try to drop as much water weight as possible?

Finally, has a woman ever won? Seems like, using weight alone, the guys have a huge advantage, given that they usually weight quite a bit more.

The trainer emphasises weight training so that weight loss isn't indicative of stress hormone release from prolonged periods of aerobic exercise. Too much cardio without any resistance results in lean tissue loss and stubborn fat retension. That's why that inner tube exists around so many highly-trained endurance athletes (on these forums).

Not only is it not accurate, it's not a measurement of "fitness" at all. But then again, this show isn't about "fitness", it's about "weight loss"[/quote]
Well, when you're talking people who can be morbidly obese, technically weight is as good an indicator of 'fitness' as anything. For all intents and purposes, two people with identical lifestyles and genetic predispositions (cholesterol, hypertension, etc.) who differ in weight will generally show a difference in overall health, with the lighter person being 'healthier'. Less mass is less stress on the heart.

I've wondered that was well. But, that wouldn't be very interesting to watch! A group of people riding bikes with their HR around 130....for 6 hours....

I'd think tossing in some weight training between bouts of cardio work like you suggest would be a good way to break the monotony of the cardio, make for some good tv, and lead to some pretty staggering weight loss results...

This would actually have the opposite of the desired effect. Excessive cardio training would lead to stress hormone production on unprecedented levels and cause muscular deterioration. Any cardio over 90 minutes in duration is strongly cautioned against for power athletes and bodybuilders for this reason. Decrease muscle mass and you lower basal metabolic rate and end up burning fewer calories. They'd also show signs of overtraining extremely quickly. To adapt their bodies would then adapt and increase efficiency on the bike/treadmill and they'd burn fewer calories still. Gotta love that plateau effect.

The above is essentially the reason P90X actually works. Short bouts of high intensity exercise, especially a combination of resistance and cardio (for people of these proportions, most resistance IS cardio), staves off overtraining to a point and allows faster recovery. It also preserves lean mass to a greater extent, and prevent adaptation for increased efficiency. Basically keep the body guessing.

Now what would REALLY ramp up their weight loss is if they had some PowerCranks and only had to produce 50W to burn 1000 Calories/hour.

I think I remember from previous season's, people talking about how much Jillian hated to do cardio/running.

Makes sense to me and seems to jive with my personal experience. Much easier to drop to race weight when I maintain weight/resistance training.

So, why does it seem that a woman will never win the contest? Men gain lean muscle mass faster, thus burning calories faster (my uneducated guess)?
