"A Place For My Head" - the aerobar "pillow"
Due to cervical disc issues and logging lots of miles on the computrainer, I have for some time wanted something to take the strain off my neck muscles so that I can more comfortably ride in the aero position for longer on the trainer. Have had a few ideas of something to build but, then this morning, I spotted a few items in the training pit/garage and threw them together. It was a miracle!

The items - small cardboard box, roll of paper towels, and cheap towel from Sam's:

So place the cardboard box along the aerobars to make a platform for the "pillow" and allow you to fit your forearms under:

And then the paper towel roll on top wrapped with towel and you're ready to go:

OK so admittedly kinda goofy but amazing how much longer you can stay aero this way.

It wouldn't do any good anyway unless he was underwater. Now, radar, that would be a different matter. Maybe he could mount some of those collision avoidance sensors used in the bumpers of cars.

Ha ha - it would never work on the road - just not as comfy with a helmet on... but seriously, a 2.5 hour zone 2 trainer ride like I did this morning is a brutal bear - anything to help me stay comfortable and build fitness is a plus.

LOL, still chuckling as I'm typing.

It also looks like his trainer is set up to address the need to wear reading glasses while watching the TV. I'm guessing he's near-sighted? :-)

That's a computer, man, not a TV, so he can keep up with the forums on ST while he works out. How motivating.

You know how it is when you read some post about a guy that says he just started cycling a couple of months ago and wants advice on how to improve his 325 watt FTP before IMLP. It helps you find the energy to push the pedals.

How in GODS right mind does someone do a 2.5 hour trainer session. I would quit cycling if I had to do that.

Er, yes, they do.

Sonar is just reflections of sound (or vibration) waves. Doesn't matter if its through air or water, although sound travels much further through water.

Oooohhh, camo bar tape... Who makes that?

If Fizik made a "winter camo" (ie. black/white/grey camo), I'd be all over it!

If you have no sponsors, why put a blank "My sponsors:" in your signature? Just curious :-)

Are you offering to sponsor me?

OK it's actually a joke - on me. Maybe I should update as I actually do have a sponsor this year - I can probably even get new bar tape now!

Similar, not the same. Sonar (SOund Navigation And Ranging) utilizes man-made technology to navigate or communicate through sound propagation, and is almost exclusively used underwater. Radar is now used for similar purposes in air.
Echo-location is what is used by bats.
They are all based off similar ideas, but are not the same.

You rode for 2.5 hours staring at the floor with your head on the pillow? Ive done long trainer rides, but always while watching TV....

personally, I do most of my training sitting on the hoods- I find that race-day is enough motivation to keep me in teh aero posn...

The brilliant idea didn't strike me til the 2 hour mark! And I had done a 3 hour outside ride the previous day followed by a 5 mile run so I was a bit fatigued.

On the trainer, I listen to music and watch CT watts and hr. Haven't ever tried watching TV...

The way I look at it, the more time I spend aero on the trainer the better - it's gotta help breathing and pedal technique on race day.
