Winning by Attrition
Came in first in my age group at the Olympic Plus distance in the London Tri over the weekend. Why? Because I was the *only* woman in my age group at this distance in the race. Do I care about these finer details? Hell no!

Keep training through menopause, ladies, come out the other side, and don't let crazy-early starts/funky distances put you off. The podium can be yours, if you just keep at it.

the way I see it, if I keep doing this stuff long enough, I'm bound to start winning my age group

Good on you! I keep hoping the same thing will happen to me. I'll outlive them all :-)

Ha! I had the same thing happen this weekend, though it was third place, not first.

Isn't there a famous quote "99% of life is just showing up"? I think it's going to be my new training/race motto... ;-P

Congrats on the age group win and your great attitude!

Congrats!

My first ironman, approximately 20 years ago, I was the only woman in the race, so I got first place overall. :)

Again, congrats!

Ahh! The beauty of getting older. I was in Iceland in the spring for IGLA and I placed in four of five events. I placed second in three and third in one because we were only three women in the same age group. Not caring about my time, I believe I placed third in the 200 IM even though I finished over a minute after the other women. Fortunately I scored the most points for my team and was the only woman to attend.

Congrats! It happened to me once too, a few years back. Long term effect was to inspire me to achieve more...I think it worked.

WAY TO GO!

I know that your team scored a lot of points because there were so many swimmers, and fast. I won't be in Seattle next year because it is not an international destination for me. Good luck if you are able to go.

CONGRATS! You can only race against those who show up at that race, so a win is a win in my books!

Me, too !
I won my age group at an aquathlon last week with 4 in it and came in second in a swim a few weeks ago with 5 in it.
Nice to feel what it is like on the "other side" for a change.

I thought I'd podium more when I hit the 50-54 age group, but there are two ladies who are new to triathlon (or one may be new to the area - I haven't met her) who are former runners who are still running sub-7:00/mile in sprint tris and low 7's in Olympic. One is also usually 1st in the swim and bike as well - there was one Olympic race where 2nd place was 30 min behind her. Unfortunately, she's very nice so I can't even dislike her ;-)

Actually that's one of the reasons I retired from racing tris at that end of season last year. Entered the 60-65 AG last year and I was on the podium every time at all the local tris. Not hard to do when there's usually only about four guys in your AG.

Not sure it is the same for women as it is for men. In my neck of the woods, women disappear during their early child-caring years and come roaring back in the 45-49 age group. I'm in 55-59, and there are a number of local women who can whoop me. I'm sticking it out until 80-84.
