USAT Nationals...ugh...help!

So I qualified for Nationals.......at Danskin. I think if you do not stop at Starbucks on the bike route during Danskin you automatically qualify. I know that finishing in the top 10% of your age group is a good thing but let's be realistic and say qualifying at Danskin might be slightly less of a challenge then qualifying at a race where nearly all of the swimmers swim freestyle.

That said..my best friend lives in Portland and Nationals will move next year, and you get a cool t-shirt so I signed up. The problem is now that I looked at results from 2007 and in my age group, my best time ever in an Olympic matches with the almost last/bop group. My best Oly was 2:47 and the run was slightly short AND the course was not really hilly. Hagg Lake is supposed to be hilly and technical.

I guess I am just nervous about being dead last...and Sally Edwards won't be there to high 5 me :)

Any advice on whether I should just bail? Pray for food poisoning for most of my AG? I am just feeling a bit inadequate about all of this.

Go and have fun. Race and spend the weekend with your friend. I'm racing track masters nationals next week and I'll be at the back of the pack, but it's for fun and the learning experience. (Next year is to go fast.)

I'll be racing against a gal who raced in the 2000 Olympics and has been world champion in the past. As long as I ride PR times, I'll be happy.

Go have fun. There are other age groups, so don't worry about being dead last. But even if you are, you are dead last in the age group national championships. Not everyone qualified for it.

It is a beautiful course and will be a lot of fun. You won't be last on the course and very likely won't be last in your AG either. Just come out and race your best and have fun and don't worry about anyone else. I'll be out there racing, so maybe i"ll see you there.

I'm in the same situation (moreso, actually -- I wish I had a 2:47 to my name). My grandmother lives in Oregon, I have friends in Portland, and I convinced my dad (whom I rarely see because he lives in Hawaii) to come to the race, but I know there's a very real chance I'll come in last. But that's okay. I love to race, and I've turned it into a ten-day vacation with people I love in a beautiful part of the country.

Good luck! I'll see you out there also! Don't worry about your time. Go for the experience. Those hills are going to be challenging. I'm more concerned about getting through the swim though. I qualified last year and this year have been focusing on sprints to get faster. The swim portions of my races this year have been between 200m-500m. I have only done one other Olympic distance this year (back in June), so this will be an interesting race. My parents and sister are all coming out to see me race. It's going to be nice to spend time with them.
