Twilight- please explain the attraction
So my wife rented this movie and I sat through it. She thought it was "a really sexy" movie and got her all worked up.

I just don't see it..... It wasn't even that great of a movie. Just a lot of really weak sexual tension, and an even weaker fight scene.

Am I just missing something because I'm a guy? Interested to hear the women's thoughts.

I hated it. So stupid. I don't get the attraction either. For good teen romance nothing beats the Molly Ringwald flicks.

Movie = lame.

Book = not so bad!

No idea, though a lot of teenage girls are going nutso for that vampire hottie...maybe that's who your wife's into?

Frankly, I thought the movie was pretty weak...but that didn't stop me from purchasing Breaking Dawn the other day at Target...

Not attracted to the actor who plays Edward - but the guy who plays Carlisle Cullen is gorgeous.

The books aren't written well, but they are engaging and entertaining. I like the fantasy world of the vampires and some of the creativity. Vampire baseball? Neat.

They are definitely "chick books" / chick flicks.

I fully admit, I am a HUGE fan of the books. Love, love, love them. The movie was very meh. The acting wasn't great, too much was missing form the story to make it make sense, effects were TERRIBLE, and I didn't think anyone really looked like they "should." I mean, I thought it was interesting to see how someone thought it should play out...but other than that, I didn't think it was a good movie in any way.

What's funny is my husband's the one who wanted to watch it. He really didn't know anything about it, he just figured "vampire flick, cool!" I tried to tell him it would be dumb but he still wanted to see it. He really needs to listen to me more often :-)

haha, I sort of though the same thing. After all, how could you possibly ruin a vampire movie?

There were a ton of places throughout the movie that I thought they were going to take it someplace interesting, but they kept failing to deliver. IE, when she goes on the run and that one is hunting her down.... so much potential there.. but I guess complex and interesting plot twists were too much to ask for. It's like you could tell it was written for a young audience (actually my cheif complaint about Harry Potter movies too).

You can't complain about that, because they WERE. Harry Potter is children's literature - the author initially wrote them as bedtime stories for her kids - and Twilight is adolescent literature/film. If you want something in that genre that might appeal to adults, SPEAK is a well written book and a decently done movie as well.

But, if you don't want stuff done "for a young audience" then stop making movie and book choices that are clearly targeted towards those age groups!

Exactly! I haven't seen the Twilight movie, but my 9 year is old read the first book and has started the second. I think some of it is over her head, but she really likes them in general.

LOVED the books, the movie wasn't so good but you just can't beat looking at Edward Cullen... it was probably the kissing scene ;)

Haha, my wife was actually saying how un-hot he was until she watched the movie. Now he's the sexiest man alive (next to george clooney and anderson cooper).

Now I'm at boarders so she can buy the books....

I think Will (muffin top) described it best when he called it "pre-teen emotional porn"...

The girlfriend liked it, and she's most of the way to completing book four. The film is defiantly trying to be a starter for the next one, in a similar way to "The Golden Compass". Only problem is they haven't made the next one of those yet, so the film ends a little daftly

It's quite nice to have a vampire film that's not all about the violence for a change. Having said that I do like the Blade or Underworld series's.

And HP is a childrens series, so it's not going to have the content you would expect from more adult literature. Go Huffelpuff, so something like that :-)

I think he was talking about the books, but I could be wrong.

One of his paying gigs is that he built and maintains (for a client) a website/portal/forum for pre-teens and teens - so his exposure level to that sort of crap is pretty high.

I haven't read the books myself, but the way my wife discribed them, they get a bit more R-rated after the first book. Someone who has read them can correct me if I am wrong.

Okay, I'll fess up, I read Twilight. But only because our 15 year old was obsessed with the series, and read the whole books nonstop cover to cover, and she's not much of a reader :), so I want to see what all the fuss was about. After reading it, I have no desire to see the movie.

That said, yesterday, in the docs office, I picked up the Atlantic and saw this article which really does a good job of describing the attraction.

http://www.theatlantic.com/...12/twilight-vampires

Or at least trying to explain the attraction to the story...

First, this wasn't an adult movie. It was a teen movie. Second, I don't think the movie can stand alone. It was a low budget movie based on an amazing book. The book is amazing because it has gotten millions of teens to read, much like Harry Potter. I teach high school English and have never seen this type of reacation from a series. I have read the series and loved them as well. While maybe corny, everyone wants a love like Edward and Bella's. It is forbidden yet it is undeniable. THe sweet and the sour. What was so great about the movie was seeing characters you have been in love with come to life. My daughters and I expected corniness, but still loved hearing certain scenes spoken out loud. Most of my students are already anticipating the second movie.

well said.
I saw this, and loved it! and I wish I had read the book, as I got a sense from the movie that the book was well written, and I wished there was something like this when I was a teenager. If it gets kids reading I am all for it. My BF actually teared up during it, and not because I was making him watch it!

I have a Tiger Beat crush on Edward Cullen. Can't be helped.

For a more "adult" vampire story line, love True Blood on HBO. First season is on On Demand. And you have to get through the first episode. It's worth it.

I liked this review at the LRB,
http://www.lrb.co.uk/v31/n06/turn03_.html
"Then afterwards I found myself feeling wretched, in a way I really haven’t for years and years and years. Why can’t I be freed of the need for food and sleep, why can’t I squirm exquisitely in skinny trousers, why can’t I be for ever beautiful and young? Awful memories were dislodged, of being young and full of longing – a really horrible feeling, a sickening excess of emotion with nowhere, quite, to put it."

Will's characterization is accurate I think..

A librarian at school gave the book to our 11-year-old boy. I read what he reads, but could not make any progress with it. Eventually he put it down and said 'Dad, I think this is a really bad book'.
