Tigerchik tell me about ginger
So after the upset stomach a while ago you alluded to using ginger as a natural anti-inflammatory. Can you tell me more about it and provide some articles to read?

can't provide articles but first hand experience here; crystallized ginger for the kids, ginger fresh for me-helps calm the upset tummy-just a little goes a loooong way

This will get you started. There is a Lancet study but not readily available online.

Looks like your questions have been answered.

I have..

ginger tea - usually drink that after swimming
crystallized ginger - usually mix in yogurt, it's very strong
candied ginger - strong but can eat plain
ginger candy - I think this is more sugar than ginger

Good stuff.

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine

i make a "tea" of fresh ginger slices in boiling water with a touch of honey when i've got an upset stomach. works a treat! mum always used to give me flat ginger-ale, but i prefer something with less sugar..

cheers!

At my grocery store, fresh ginger is with the fresh veggies.

Isn't fresh ginger readily available in New England?

Around here, that's kind of like asking someone where you can get lettuce. It's in every grocery store. I never tried it boiled in water for tea. I like that idea...

as I've never bought it, I don't know. I don't remember seeing it in the store and I'm a pretty good scavenger of fruits and veggies.

I'll look and report back!

Hey - was it you who told me about "Looking for Calvin and Hobbes" ? -- I got it as a birthday present :-)

I've never lived anywhere that didn't have fresh ginger easily and readily available just about anywhere produce was sold.

Not to imply anything, but you do know what you're looking for, right? It looks like this:

Yes, I got "Looking for Calvin & Hobbes" for Christmas.
I miss that cartoon. It wasn't ahead of it's time, it was once in a lifetime.

Ginger. (just to stay on topic). ;)

There is never so much school work that you cannot read Calvin and Hobbes.

On the Ginger Topic, you may also be able to find it already chopped in the produce section. I am with Khai on this one, Fresh ginger has been available everywhere I have lived. You may want to try one of the Asian Markets.

Whenever I write a test I include one (Calvin & Hobbes) that is pertinent for my students.

Just went to my neighborhood store and they have fresh, chopped, candied, dry, ground, and pickled ginger. Screwed up, that should have said ginger not garlic.

You have to peel fresh ginger before you use it. Well, maybe it can be used unpeeled, but I've never tried that. A little goes a long way, but I love the stuff.

If you're just slicing it up and tossing it into a stir fry (or whatever) in quarter sized "rounds" you can get away with not peeling it as most people wouldn't eat a disc of ginger that big - but it's pretty easy to peel, so I tend to peel it all the time.

TC, it should be in a big pile right next to the garlic and onions. Look for a firm, relatively smooth piece. Joints don't matter, though it's easier to peel a larger phalanx. :p If it looks wrinkled or weathered, it's old - you don't want it. Also, if you can't find a small enough piece, just snap off what you want.

Actually, I'm more of a Maryann guy. Ginger was a bit too high maintenance and a bit too much of a drama queen for me.

Because of this thread I picked up some fresh ginger at the store the other day. I've used the microplane grater to put some in my smooties. I don't peel for that. Very yummy.

I always have one or two bottles of ginger ale in the house because nothing settles my stomach better than that. My mom gave it to me as a kid and it has always worked. I also keep some of the chewies in my bag for long races. I've never used them because I haven't needed to but it is common for ultra runners and I figure I can always try it if I'm close to hurling :-)
