There are so few of us!

Judging by the main forum poll, we are a tiny fraction of ST users (or at least ppl who respond to a poll)! I didn't realize this. I thought triathlon was approaching 50/50, why is ST so different?

Well, maybe its a girl thing.:-) I post regularly but my wife might lurk only once in awhile. She tells me to let her know if anything interesting shows up.

Yeah it's quite the sausage fest eh? I was very surprised at first blush, then realized that ST can be a pretty harsh environment and a lot of chicks probably just say "screw it, these boys are jerks who just want pics..." and then go elsewhere ;-)

Personally, as a lurker and occasional poster, there is a dick measuring quality about the main forum which is terribly off putting!

For instance, anyone over 12 hours in an IM is a 'tourist', (unless it is one of the favored ST in crowd in which case they did a great job toughing it out).

Anyone around 4 hours in a marathon is a loser. I have even seen it written 'anything over 2.40 is not fast'.

Everybody trains for at least 20 hours a week, except the ones who train for 10 hours a week and still go under 10 hours in an IM with a broken leg.

Not to mention the 'butterface' comments.

So I tend to read race reports, say 'screw it', and go elsewhere. (oh, and the 'strange denizens of the pool' which is what got me here in the first place, and is still one of the funniest things I have ever read in my life)

The poll also reveals that 5% are of indeterminate gender - perhaps with a little bit of persuasion, you could get the womens up to 22%.

Of course, it might just mean that saddle numbness is a bigger problem than we'd previously realized.

Yep, you do need a pretty thick skin and/or be able to ignore a lot of the cr*p that can get posted here. Some of my best buds have come thru ST, as well as some of the best experiences and insights, so I can't really complain, I'm still netting out on the positive side ;-)

blast!! i missed the poll...i could have helped raise our %, but i failed...

this place can be a bit intimidating. took me a while to decide to sign-up. and even then i decided to go with a very unfeminine user name. not quite sure now what that was supposed to achieve.

maybe women don't come here too often because we don't tend to get quite so caught up in the endless gear discussions and bike porn pics. personally, i love it, and i've learned a ton, but i really don't have anything useful to add to those discussion so i don't respond to any of those threads.

still feel i have so much more to learn so i'll keep coming back here, but i'm not likely to ever be a prolific poster. i can make an effort to post an occasional comment, but to get into a length debate...not going to happen.

somewhat amusing anecdote that relates to the above:

some friends of ours were camping at a conservation area about 35km from our place, and had invited us to come out and visit them on saturday afternoon. it being a gorgeous day, tanker decided he wanted to ride his motorcycle, and i figured i'd use it as a training ride. we both rode out, had some fun around the campfire with our friends, and then went to head home. tanker passed me about 5mins away from the conservation area as i was panting my way up a hill, blew me a kiss, and said he'd see me at home.

a few minutes later 4 young lads (maybe seniors in highschool or 1st/2nd year university age) in a little red hatchback pulled up beside me and matched speed. the boy in the rear passenger seat hollered something i could barely hear over the wind and my (volume very low) mp3 player as i looked over to see who was pacing me. sounded kind of like "you're a horse ass"! not figuring this was worth a response, i looked away and just kept pedaling.

got to a stoplight a few minutes later, and look who's stopped at the red light! i pulled up beside the car, pulled one earbud out, and asked him in a pissed-off tone if he'd care to repeat what he said while i could hear him. his reply:

"you're gorgeous!"

i managed to stammer out a "thanks" whilst turning red, as the light went green and they took off. i'd just automatically assumed that these young fellows would be making fun of me riding along with my rump in the air, and was astounded to find out one of them was trying to pay me a compliment! perfect example of perception vs. reality.

cheers!

Are you sure he wasn't being sarcastic? There are a lot of cruel people out there.

this is probably true and it does not mean 4h+ people are losers.

I would take it at face value! Not everybody is sarcastic - this is just another example of why more women don't post on this site - even other women are mean! We need to support each other.

Well, even if they were being sarcastic, it's better to assume that they were being nice, not mean!

Nice story!

As to 4 hour marathons- no, people at that speed or slower are absolutely not losers, nethier are 12 hour plus IM finishers- but there are a lot of people on the main forum who think so, and say so in no uncertain terms. Look at all the numerous threads saying there should be swim tests, earlier cut offs, and don't even think about looking for anything that involves people walking a marathon!

Example- this morning, somewhere there is a comment about how you shouldn't even CONSIDER an IM unless you are in the top half of your AG for a HIM.

Why the hell not????

[there should be swim tests]
I am not sure if everybody want those swim tests for the same reasons.
One angle is definitively safety consideration rather than being "slow" (you can be "slow" timewise but still confortably swim the distance).

Agreed, especially with the # of deaths/near-deaths, which seems to happen more often in the BOP. When I registered for IMWA for '05, you had to have completed at least 1 triathlon, that was the Australian tri fed's rule at the time for long distance races (not sure if it still is today). I remember thinking to myself "well, dunh, of course I should have to show I have done a tri before signing up for an IM...". I hear of situations where people who cannot swim AT ALL sign up for IM - then spend a year learning how to swim. Dangerous? Possibly. Foolhardy? Definitely (IMHO). My attitude: what's the frickin hurry? You can do an IM next year... I dunno, guess I'm just strange like that... ;-)

I think you have used the most important word-FINISHER

I get tired of the repetative nature of the posts/questions. My volume of posts has dropped dramatically because it is the same stuff hashed over and over. I do get into threads on the main forum when I see there is a women's point of view missing that is really relavent to the post. For example, the weight lifting thread. No discussions on why women should weight lift so I contributed there.

I've also made my point about slow finishers and I am one of them and have never hidden that fact. Jumping into that still hot topic has gotten old for me. I do sometimes if I find it really irritating.

In the LR it has been completely taken over by about 5 guys and boy do they like to hear themselves talk! I do like to read the funny and "happy" threads. I get enough negative energy from my job, most days. Don't need it here as well.

There is good info here if you are willing to dig around a bit. I've gotten good advice when I've asked for it and I've made several new friends here. We've most of our conversations over to Facebook.

So true. What can you say about bike fit, clinchers vs tubulars or Cervelos that hasn't been said before. I'm sure I've made any given post on these topics at least a hundred times before. But the thing we shouldn't forget is that there are always newbies coming onboard and this "old info" is new and helpful to them.

I don't want to take this post on a tangent, but as we're now discussing the Women's forum in general (or so it seems), I have to say that I find it to be a kinder, gentler place, where women can share stories and help motivate one another. Frankly, I find that refreshing, and sorely needed! I appreciate the men-folk's thoughts and comments when they come and post, but when it's a clear attempt to rabble-rouse (or #$%! disturb) it's just not ... cool. There's another forum that's more amenable to measuring up against one another and telling everyone that "mine is better than yours" -- here, I feel like it's a different vibe. And that's why I read Women's. I've seen the same information posted again and again, but hey -- that's what we're posting. I suppose I should start coming up with interesting new tid-bits. Or sharing the ones that I hear. In any case, thanks for making this a more positive environment, ladies. Bravo!

Separately, I was on a ride this summer with my Sugar. We were going up a pretty good roller, and I was hunkered down, convinced that I could get to the top of this hill without getting out of the saddle. I was paying no attention to the cars zipping by. Then a motorcycle came by, and a guy shouted something out -- I couldn't hear him at all, but presumed he was making fun of me in some respect. (That's the common thought, right ladies? Interesting that we all have that reaction.) It wasn't until later, when I told Sugar that those guys on the bike must have been making fun of me that he said that they were commenting (actually complementing) my backside. He then said, "See? I TOLD you!" *sigh, smile*

heck yeah - guess I've been around too long and read too many of the same old, same old... so I totally get what you're saying (writing). Sometimes the LR can be a great escape from reality tho ;-)
