Tell me it will be okay...I just ate a whole pizza!
Sort of like the pity party thread...Cheer me up please!

I'm in Tempe already for IMAZ next week. Sunday I did the open water swim and 3/4 of the way through the swim my eye started to hurt. I get out and my eye really hurts. I head back to my hotel and I'm in a world of pain. I take some tylenol, put a bag of ice on my eye and take a nap. I consult a couple dr friends of mine who say I need to go to the ER. I go to the ER and find out I have a corneal abrasion. I suspect it is from my goggles (Swedish goggles). I guess I'll be going back to my old standby Aquasphere Kaimana. ER said my eye should heal in 24-48 hours of rest and treatments (some antibacterial ointment and pain meds). I am supposed to have 48 hours of ocular rest (ie, dark, no tv, computer etc...which I am now violating....but I am typing with both of my eyes closed, so sorry for any typos).

Monday about 3 PM I realize I haven't eaten anything since before the swim (over 30 hours). I stuck in my hotel because I can't walk outside because it's too bright and focusing my good eye actually makes my bad eye hurt. So I order a pizza. I over the course of 6 hours I ate the whole thing (it was thin crust and loaded with fresh vegies). I was doing so well with my no pizza before IMAZ diet. The only other time I broke the diet is in January when I cracked a rib and felt sorry for myself. This time I'm telling myself it was out of necessity...but I am feeling sorry for myself a bit.

To top it all off, I'm supposed to be in Tuscon visitng with friends I haven't seen in 5 years, but I can't drive. The hotel has been great shuttling me to the ER, pharmacy and they are taking me to my follow up opthamalogy appointment tomorrow morning. I'm checking out of the hotel tomorrow and movign into the house I rented for the week. They even offered to take me there since I can't drive. My sister gets in Wed and will get the rental car then. Hopefully my eye will be okay that she and I can go do things.

Oh jeez... the pizza is the least of your worries. You were probably in a massive calorie deficit and needed it all. No biggie. (Don't get me started on the month's worth of chocolate I ate at a party tonight...)

EVERYTHING WILL BE OK. Don't sweat the pizza. Stay inside and rest that eye. Put on your darkest sunglasses. Your hotel is awesome! Can your Tucson friends come up to see you?

And stop reading this! :)

(And btw, remember the story about Paula Newby-Fraser eating something like half a cheeseburger pizza and an entire pan of brownies the night before Hawaii some year? and then of course winning? see, everything will be OK!)

Don't worry about the pizza!

As for the eye - buy a patch, seriously! I scratched my cornea last year on a ride in lake placid the day before the race. Luckily I was only spectating last year but it sucked! I needed to study for my thesis defence but couldn't read due to pain, wearing a patch while on the computer/reading for a couple of days was a life saver.

Have a great race!

Hey don't worry about the pizza. You ate it over 6 hours. I can eat 3 meals in that time. I hope your eye feels better. Have a great race!!!

I hear that Rx for corneal abrasion is one thin crust pizza loaded with veggies ;)
Seriously, it's not any more calories than you would need to consume in 36 hours. Besides, you need extra calories to heal your injury!
Have fun at IMAZ--you're gonna have a great race!

NO PROBLEM! You will burn that pizza off shortly in that little race you are doing this weekend. Just think, by the time you get to the run you will have lost several pounds so you WILL be a lighter weight than what you normally run at. It sounds like you are handling the eye condition just fine and that you are looking for something to panic about so let it be this pizza thing and have a great race. I can't wait to hear all about it!

If you get a patch you can say things like "Arrgh, matey give my that thar pizza! Arrgh...." Maybe get a little parrot for your shoulder too.

Seriously I think you'll be fine. Good luck with the eye.

Pizza has great protein and carbs, plus I'm sure you got a couple servings of veggies out of it.

Keep taking it easy!

Don't sweat the pizza. As someone who has a terrible time sticking to a diet, I have two thoughts that might help:

1. Given the amount of time you'd gone without eating, you'd missed five meals (three on Race Day, plus breakfast and lunch on Monday) before you ordered that pizza. By the time you finished eating the pizza, you would have missed six meals if you hadn't eaten. One sixth of a pizza per meal is not an unreasonable portion size.

2. I've found that I've never been able to gain more weight in a week than I can lose in two, and I've done things like eating everything in sight for a week straight and gaining five pounds. Whenever I have a really bad one-day slip-up (like eating 3/4 of a pizza for dinner after having a sensible breakfast and lunch) and I get right back "on program," I can typically end up with a weight loss (or at least no gain) a week later.

If you make it to Tucson, try the pizza place Sauce. The crust is very thin and I eat a whole pizza EVERY TIME I go there! Then if you're at the one on Oracle you can go to Frost which is a gelato place right next door and get some of the yummiest gelato ever.

I hope your eye is better! Sounds like the hotel you're at is very accommodating!

Good luck this weekend, I'll be at the TriSports run aid station.

I just bought a patch. It's under my sunglasses so you can't see it really. The opthamalogist said I might not be able to race because of the sunlight. Maybe I'll race in a patch.

AAARRRGGGHHHH Give me some gatorade Matey!

The eye does feel a ton better today, like there's only a small scratch. Hopefully one more day of 'rest' and I'll be okay. I just need to stay away from the Pizza today.

I would totally race in a patch if I had to. Think of the cool things you would do with it! Bedazzle it!

Rest up! And I wouldn't worry too much about not being able to race for a few more days. I scratched my cornea on my first day of graduate school using a apricot face scrub. A piece of the abrasive bits got in my eye and cause the abrasion. It believe it was only 2 days or so of resting the eye and adding drops before I was all ok. It was lovely to have to attend my first few graduate classes with an eye patch on.

And I wouldn't recommend racing with the patch. I had to drive home from the Dr's with the patch on and it wasn't fun. I had almost no depth perception.

Enjoy your few days as a pirate.

Take care of that eye, and don't sweat the pizza BUT...that's IT for the pre race gorging! really. A lot of people (is this your first?) think: oh well I am doing an ironman I can and should eat a lot. Don't overeat the days leading up to the race. Even a couple pounds heavier is noticeable to speed and performance. And no, you wont lose it by the time you are on the run, and if you have lost weight from the time it starts til when the run starts, you have bigger problems. Save the pizza and ice cream for after the race.
And take care of the eye.
Good luck!

I hope I don't have to wear it. I have terrible depth perception as it is. But right now the patch is really helping me be able to not be sequestered in the house! I'm getting funny looks though!

I have another dr appt on Friday afternoon to have them look at it. Hoping for good news. I guess I scratched it a lot worse than the ER thought. Oh well, this gives me something other than the race to think about.

This is my second IM. The main reason I gave up pizza this time around is because I can eat everything else in moderation. Pizza I can't. I've really dropped a lot of weight to get down to my ideal racing weight and am being pretty damn anal during the taper to not gain any back. So far it's worked. I managed to get out to a grocery and got some good food for the house. Now I'm back to resting the eye for the rest of the day/night.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for the eye!

No worries about the pizza. I thought you were SUPPOSED to eat the whole thing, anyway! I too have low impulse control with pizza...

Don't sweat the pizza. I ate way more cals than that yesterday, and you practically spread it out over the whole day..

Heal heal heal heal... see you Friday!

Well, I was going to ding you for your thread title, after all, eating a whole pizza story belongs in a guy forum, not the Womens. But, since you took over six hours to do it, I think you'll get by the forum gender police (er ..., me.)

Btw, I love your posts.

Good luck this weekend.

Most guys wouldn't stress about eating a whole pizza...well I guess a lot of guys on this site would.

And I have some of those eating a whole pizza stories that would go in the main forum, I used to enter eating contests all the time and kick guys butts!

I like the womens room, the riff raff stays away.
