More women should do Norseman Xtreme Triathlon

More women should do Norseman Xtreme Triathlon

As a Norwegian in the US I am constantly promoting one of the most unique triathlon in the world, Norseman Xtreme Triathlon in Norway.
This is a point to point race over the Ironman distance. You jump off a ferry in a fjord, bike over mountains and finish the run with 5,000 vertical feet climbing on the last 10 miles of the marathon.

I know the race organizers want more women to participate. I will sign up for the 2013 version and I hope a lot of women will also.
Here you have the official video from 2012:

I agree. Not sure why there aren't more since I know a lot of badass women.

If I was still doing tris this is exactly the kind of stuff I'd do. Alas, I can't deal with that much time on the bike.

Totally my kind of race! However, a bit cost prohibitive at the moment. You never know, P and I have a bad habit of signing up for races half way around the world after a bunch of wine... ;-)

X3. My old heart does weird stuff in ice-cold water that acutely reminds me of my mortality. Maybe more warm-up is needed, but near-death experiences don't turn me on like they used to ;-)

How cold is the water? Survived CDA last eyar, (this year was a shade warmer), but don't think I would be happy if it was any colder frankly

According to the race manual, the water in Norway is as warm as the water at Ironman California 70.3 (Oceanside), at 60-63 degrees.

Hmmph, I don't believe that water temperature 17 miles from Mexico and in Norway are the same-I just don't buy it.

The water temperature is not too bad. Remember this is in a fjord and Norway does not have any polar bears ;-)

My experience is that Americans are usually good swimmers so I would not worry to much about the swim.

What is hard? The bike and the run. But I believe women who sign up are on average in better shape than men.

I am with Andy - this is my kind of race. I along with another Chicago women have actually tossed around the idea but (also like Andy), it is a bit cost prohibitive for us. I may try to run some numbers to see if I could make it work for 2014 or 2015.

Dudette, we could get a ST womens contingent - I bet if we find 10 we could get a break on travel.

The water temps are in the 50s...sometimes mid 50s, sometimes high 50s (or 12.5 to 14 C for those outside the US). It can drop in temperature as you get near the finish, especially in a year with late snow melt into the river that ends up in Eidfjord (where the swim is held). The air temp on the Hardangavidda plateau can be in the 40s, but hopefully the rest of the bike is warmer (and parts are much warmer). The run starts warm, and ends colder...there have been years with snow at the top. The race is hard to beat for beauty and a true test of endurance, but the weather changes throughout the day can drive you nuts!

As a 2X Norseman, I'm not sure even a group discount would entice me back (time to do something new!), but I'm happy to offer encouragement to the womens of ST who might be thinking of trying to race.

Bottom line - Norway is too damn expensive as a destination tri for most people, especially compared to other places where the weather is also more guaranteed. You can buy a 12 pack of beer in N.A. for the price of a bottle in Norway and everything else is the same proportions. I like Norway, but you should be able to understand why its not everybody's first choice for a tri.

It would be a long shot--I would need to do a lot of prep for my old bones to survive the bike/run--but I'm willing to fantasize about a 2015 ST womens team.

Halvard, do you think the organizers would give some consideration to blocking out some spaces for a womens team? Might be hard to plan around a lottery.

Even though I know several of the race organizers I am not an official spoke person for them. But this is from Norseman’s web site regarding the 2013 race.

Norseman is traditionally held the first weekend of August. An official date is not yet set for 2013, but you can expect it to be the same weekend as before.
Norseman 2012 is fully booked. Enrollment for 2013 will open in early October.
To enter the lottery we will have a full week open for registration, so this is not first come first serve.

  • There will be an elite quota where a jury will select athletes based on merits.
  • A lottery of the majority of the slots.
  • By invitation by the Race Director.

To enter the race we will have a full week open for registration, so this is not first come first serve.
The lottery will have quotas for for Norwegians vs Foreigners and Male vs Female.

Regarding costs going to Norway. Yes, Norway is expensive compare to the US. So my advice will be, do not take your habits with you if you travel to Norway. You can enjoy the travel without getting totally broke. It is like traveling in Switzerland. Rick Steves has a lot of good advices traveling in Norway.

My mom and her family is from the T2 and run leg area so I have spent many happy days in that area growing up. Before my mom had to give in for cancer she lived at the bottom of Zombie hill and could look up on the mountain Gaustatoppen every day. Of course I am biased, but it is a beautiful and wild area.
Sign from the bike leg :-)

My husband and I raced Norseman in 2007 and LOVED it. We would definitely go back but it is a little expensive for us. It was, by far, one of our favorite races and we definitely hope to get back someday. The water was cold but it wasn't too bad. Plus, in the Norseman most people change into cycling specific clothing after the swim so you aren't getting onto your bike in a wet swimsuit. The bike and run course are breathtaking. Unfortunately for us, we were unable to finish at the top of the mountain because the weather was unfavorable so we finished at the alternate finish line. That is one of the main reasons we would like to go back, so we can have another chance to finish at the top of the mountain!

X 4. I would love to do this race and it isn't just the water, the cold would do me in, but the cold water + cold air on the bike, I would be hypothermic. Would love to do the run, I wish relay was an option!
