goals for this coming week: day off from running no, am doing it today, bike at least 18 mi no, only bike commuted once, be super productive M-F so I can enjoy all of the weekend (which I will probably do anyway, but it would be good if I could be super productive...) I had a busy week but am happy with the amount of work I got done. I did very little work on the weekend - mostly just a couple maths problems or some reading before brother woke up

I had an amazing time with my brother. We went to the coast, went rock climbing at the climbing gym, went in the hot tub and played on the diving boards, went out to eat, went for a walk along the Portland waterfront, saw two movies, played cribbage, carved pumpkins - it was great.

I have been trying for several weeks to take a day off from running. Didn't do it last week, but today is a total rest day. Had to get up at 2:45 am to take him to the airport, and then I went back to my apartment to catch some more zzz's.

Sport totals

Goals this week

 Glad you had fun with your brother.

I actually went to the pool and got in the warm pool that has the stairs you can walk right down into, and was able to do a little swimming and some walking back-and-forth to work on my knee bending. Yea! I also did a number of walks and I'm up to 40 minutes. So I had a little over two hours total of exercise for the week, not counting any of the physical therapy. So I'm happy with that.

Not a bad week considering. I ended up having two full days off from exercise in a row due to other extra-curricular activities.
Then CX race on Sunday. It went really really well. I ended up 2nd in my race, and not as far behind the 1st place woman as I usually am (she is usually several minutes ahead of me). The down side? Well, despite charging "USA Cycling" prices, we got "bumpkin local race" prizes. I won a 6 pack of local beer, available in our local groceries for about $9. I guess I have been living the good life too long, as in the races I do, used to having 1st-5th get envelopes of cash. Oh well. I guess I can at least just be happy with my performance.

Going to the ortho specialist tomorrow. My friend sent me there and knows the doc personally. So let's hope they get things figured out.

things are feeling OK. I keep debating on trying out a short easy run or not. To see if the issues arise again.

I had a decent swim last night, so starting the work week off OK.

Personal worst time at the 50k. Figured I'd just run as long as I felt good and see what happened later when I didn't. Cold day - below freezing at the start, with a high of 3c/37f and occasional snow showers. I was the only one dumb enough to be running in a skirt, but it was a very runnable course - not too much technical singletrack and only a few short hills here and there. Came through the first half in decent time (2:48:xx, then lost 4mins veering off to the portajohns by the start line as I'd needed one since 9km in) and zero problems from the enormous blisters I worked up while backpacking 2 weeks ago, but smashed my right 2nd toe off a root with 3k to go in the first loop (28k left total). Thought I'd broken it, and may have been favouring my right foot as my left knee went south on me part way through the 2nd loop. Didn't hurt walking, but running made the lateral side very sore, and with 10k left to go I couldn't run uphill anymore. By 7k left to go I could barely run at all and the knee was sore while walking, especially downhill (bending it to 90 degrees hurt like hell). Spent most of the 2nd loop all alone, as it's a small race - only 68 registered for the 50k, which is probably a good thing as I had to use a tree as a portajohn at 4.5hrs. With 3k left to go I stopped to get my hand bottle refilled at an aid station and the knee just about seized up on me. Better yet, I smashed my injured toe AGAIN on THE SAME DAMN ROOT just after leaving said aid station. I was in agony, but actually managed to run most of the last 3k - more than I had run in quite awhile, really. Kept telling myself "if it hurts to walk, you might as well run", though I have confirmation from my husband that I was whimpering like a wounded animal as I did so. Actually persuaded myself to run up the final hill to the finish, coming through in 6:11:21. Disappointed, since the trail was in great condition and the weather suited my fat ass perfectly - with better fitness/less stupidity it could've been a PR day, but spending most of the summer injured meant I just didn't have the durability.




No photographers on course, so my "artist"'s interpretation of 3k left to go. I somehow managed to stay upright.




The final little hill to the finish, landing on that sore knee.


On the bright side, the fall colours were very pretty - the course is on mountain bike trails around a reservoir in a conservation area with a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees, so there was lots of variety and lovely views.


So I finish, get my medal and go inside to see what horrible thing I've done to my toe. All I know is that it feels wet - probably bleeding? - and the toe seam of my sock feels like 200 grit sandpaper rubbing on top of it behind the nail. A large part of me didn't want to look, but someone has to deal with this crap and my sweet husband simply cannot handle anything gross or painful to do with toes; it shuts him right down. So, off with the gaiters, shoes and socks and...ergh...apparently I smashed the toe hard enough to detach the roots of the nail, the rear points of which have rubbed up a nasty blister (which is what was making it feel wet) and are scraping up the raw skin underneath (which is why I thought my sock seam was munching on me).


Don't google "toenail blister". Just don't.


So I got to go home and use a pair of pliers to remove the poor little malformed nail that was all I had left after the rest of the toenail fell off a few weeks ago, actually having to cut it out of the callous I always get on the end of that toe. Then I slapped some antibiotic ointment on the nail bed, bound it up and wore flip flops for the rest of the day. That I managed all this without hurling or passing out after running a damn 50k earlier in the day still amazes me.


I did manage to get a sock and shoes on Sunday and Monday to do some walking & hiking (and voting). I suspect the knee thing is actually a result of a tight muscle in my calf, so I've been using my hands and The Stick to try to loosen it up since I'm not quite up to foam rolling yet. The right knee started hurting in similar fashion, too, and the same spot in the lateral calf is really sore, so I'm really hoping this isn't something that's going to be a big deal. I'd only done 2 decently long runs (24k + 28k - everything else was 20km or less) in prep for this race, so the wheels coming off late in the game is nothing to be surprised about.


Going to try hitting the pool tonight despite a large amount of DO NOT WANT when it comes to dipping my poor toe in chlorine, but I know it'll help me feel better overall. Leg soreness hasn't been too terribly bad - guess walking so much of the 2nd loop made things a little easier on them than usual.


Have a 6-hour on the 31st, so I have to take things rather carefully with recovery. I just hope I can get my knee sorted out!

Congrats on the 50k. Tripping over the same root twice is exactly something I would do. I can't believe you ripped your own toenail out with pliers. I have lost toenails, sure, but never pulled them out myself! Can you get one of those waterproof bandages for your toe? Maybe some of that plastic (also waterproof) tape on it will help it stay in place.

Thanks - I do actually have it all sealed up under a "guranteed waterproof" fingertip-shape bandage I bought specifically to replace my initial Medipore/tape job done the day of the race. Changed it up last night & it seems pretty solid, so I'll give it a shot. I wouldn't really consider it an open wound at this point - hell, it didn't even bleed when I removed the nail.

If I never have to do that again, though, I'll consider myself lucky.

X2, and having had a similar incident (at 25k into Comrades - I toe punted one of those hiway reflector/cateyes - owie) and having lost many nails, just be careful. I had a friend whose son went swimming with a small open blister on his heel (from soccer) and he nearly died from flesh-eating disease. Extreme case of course but just goes to show... :-(

And I'm really sorry about the PW. You finished. You should be proud of that. Lots of people quit races for less.

Doing well, adjusting to new job read: lovin' it!.

- skate 5x - DONE and man are my legs cooked
- ride 2x - DONE and this helped with the cooking (100k in 2 days)
- run 3x (trying to be realistic here) - DONE and pretty happy that I was able to run reasonably OK after all the above
- swim 1x (yes - K and I are are determined to swim Sundays before dinner - last time in the pool, she taught herself flipturns, and actually was starting to roll & breathe half decently) - DONE and I am officially the T-rex in the pool.


This week:
- Skate 4x including 1st meet of the season (and no more toe-pick starts allowed in short track so that will be an interesting adjustment) - hoping to PB at least my 500m, I need 1:06 to qual for Provincial champs...
- Ride 2x EZ and bail on Fri's ride if nec to keep legs fresh!
- Run 3x EZ
- Swim 1x

UPDATE - I have a diagnosis. Bilateral proximal hamstring tendinosis. Rx for PT.
I have a good friend who works for a PT co. and already have a phone number to call, the place has an alter-g treadmill and mucho experience with runners.

The last thing I did that counted as exercise was 45 minutes on the trainer on Sunday. It was a good 45 minutes, mind, with sweat, and I did do some homework while I was at it. I have just been so exhausted and my fibromyalgia has been kicking my butt. I'm not even trying to set new goals right now, just get through day to day. Even I'm totally over myself this week, so I'm going back to my hole to sulk.

I am so proud of all you ladies doing fantastic things, activities and toenail maintenance. Keep it up, you're all inspiring.

Although - funny story for the week...

I am English, living in the US. I graduated with my Associates in May, and this is my first term at a 4-year school working towards my BSc. One of my professors docked points off my grade for an assignment last week for writing in "whilst" - he considered it a misspelling. So I emailed for clarification, making note that I often use English-English such as apologise, honour, organise and colour, and it has never been an issue before. The response I got was essentially, you live in America; use American English. This week, I get the following comment on another assignment:
"You did excellent using the template as a guideline."

I "did excellent"? Just... Wow. Thanks, prof, for letting me know that I need to write everything for you at no more than an 8th grade level, and should do as you say, not as you do.

I've spent most of the week not wanting to be at work & not wanting to be at home. Doesn't leave a lot of options of feeling at peace. Last night was a bit better thank goodness.

First world problems, right?! Someone wise once taught me that it doesn't matter how big or small something is in the relative scheme of things, if it matters to you, it's important. Yeah, there are starving kids somewhere. Doesn't invalidate anyone elses' feelings.

I am comforted to not feel alone. It's really easy to look at other people and be like, well, your $hit's all together and mine isn't, whether or not it's true.

That's funny.
FWIW, I am American but prefer British English, and use it exclusively. My professors are accustomed to it, and I've given enough talks at conferences now that people know this is my peculiar little quirk. (Well, one of them). You need to do maths - mathematicians are wonderfully accepting of each others' eccentricities.

Oh good grief... as a Canuck who often deals with US customers and suppliers, I always laugh at that one... I just remind them it's a Proh-cess not a Praw-cess and we all laugh and have beers...

But as long as you dun excellent... that's all that matters, eh? :-)

(I'd keep an eye on this prof tho, particularly if you are in sciences - is he going to ding you for using SI instead of imperial units?)

Thank someone, somewhere that it's an accelerated nine-week term, and it's in Project Management (purely to get the education hours so that I can certify, since I haven't documented the previous ten years of experience). So no SI unit issues, although he has dinged me also for firstly not including citations (which were not specified to be included) and then for not presenting my citations in APA format.

I have found that some "professors" have issues with non-traditional students who are not 18 years old, malleable, and without the experience to question anything. My adviser had a similar issue - told me that I shouldn't register for Business Systems Analysis & Design at the same time as Financial Accounting because "the math load might be too much for you." I cringed at the mansplaining and pointed out that as a former physics and math major working in a technical field, I felt I would be more than adequately prepared.

And the moral of this story is: Kids, stay in school when you're young. It's a serious disadvantage going back in your 30's.
