Dear Clothing Manufacturers:

Just two little things:

1. I understand that we don't like excessive lengths of drawstrings hanging out of our shorts/pants, but please remember that before we get to our waists, we have to be able to get our pants over our hips, which for some of us are 10" bigger and therefore require a little more string to keep it from getting pulled into the hem. I've tried tying the string in a knot, but some have strings that are so short that it makes them difficult to get on. Tying big knots on the ends doesn't usually work, and if I tuck the string in after getting the pants over my bottom, it looks as if I have two random little bumps under my spandex. Why not add a few inches, and then the women who don't like or need the excess length can trim them?

2. Are there any other women out there who don't want a bra to do anything other than cover, support, and maybe wick away sweat? I have no boobs to speak of, and I'm ok with that. I don't want to be pushed up, padded, separated, or anything else, ESPECIALLY in a sports bra!

Anybody else have issues, or am I too picky??

I personally don't think running pants designed to be tight need drawstrings at all. They just annoy me

I enjoy sports bras with a little padding because my girls get really sensitive during long runs and the padding protects against this to some extent. I just wish the pads would stay put!

Agreed on the string. Either it is way too long or I have to pull it out.

I really like the Champion Seamless bras because they hold the girls without adding padding. I get mine at Target but here they are on the Champion site:

A bit of thread drift here, but I just have to share this one.

Chatting to a friend of mine after IM Melbourne he said that as he was waiting for me to come through the chute he noticed a girl with fairly obvious falsies. We were discussing the shrinking effect that endurance sport tends to have on the assets, girls, whatever you like to call them and why we would choose to get replacements built in and he mentioned the term 'sock puppets'.

SOCK PUPPETS??? I love it!!!!! :-)

Dear Manufacturers:

#3. Not all women are 5'4" and weigh 200 pounds. In fact, many of us are much taller and thinner. We are tired of having tights with a 30" inseam that only comes to mid-shin. It makes for very cold ankles. Please add some length to your tights or even offer a "Long" version of your tights across all size ranges.

Thank you.

I am right there with you on the bras. Padding just makes me hot. If people are offended because I have headlights, they should avert their eyes.

After much trial and error (and online chatting to determine which models are padded and which are not), I have found that the Brooks Versatile bra works well for me, as does the Moving Comfort Phoebe bra (since they are sister companies, I think they may be using the same pattern). They both have special stitching to "separate" the girls, but since I don't have anything to separate, it is merely decorative. I have also tried T-9 seamless bras and also Champion seamless and although I like the seamless design, both seemed to stretch out really fast so now they are relegated to "bike only" status.

Full disclosure: I am on the Brooks Fanatics team, so I tend to wear only their run gear.

I also have a hard time finding women's tops that are wide enough in the chest/shoulders to accomodate the shoulders/lats swimming creates. Either the sleeves ride up to create a sleeveless look (like the boys in "The Outsiders") or I buy a men's shirt and accept looking dumpy.

Word. I find myself constantly looking for very tall socks..

Cheers!

This could go on the "dumb things guys say" thread, but your comment reminded me of what my LBS owner said a few years ago. He was explaining to his petite wife why she needed a women-specific bike, although she really liked the bike I had. He told her "Diane has guy shoulders, she needs a guy's bike." Um, gee, thanks!

Dear Manufacturers,

Can we finally just move away from the arbitrary 2, 8, 14, sizing (which means different things to different manufacturers and even within manufacturers doesn't really mean anything thanks to vanity sizing where today's 8 is yesterday's 12) and just go with actual measurements like men do. That might actually bring me back to online shopping whereas now I have no idea whether I'll be a 2 or a 12 in your clothing and really don't feel like paying for shipping returns back to you.

Thanks

PS - Patagonia sports bras are my absolute favorite for my small 'girls.' I don't need a ton of support so these bras work perfectly without seperating/padding/etc. Plus they look super cute on those very rare days when I actually strip down to a sports bra during a workout.

I also have small boobs and recently got a couple Oakley continuity sports bras. My only regret is that I didn't get more. The material is the most comfortable I've ever had. There's no padding.

#4: Learn where to properly put a gusset in a pair of compression shorts. I've had shorts with the gusset IN THE BACK (as in visible to folks behind me)! And a gusset the size of a dime is useless folks. Useless!

I completely agree with you on the clothing size because it is all too confusing. I do not know if I wear a size 0,2 or 4 or even an XXS, XS or S. I hate having to think about it when purchasing online. Men sizes are no longer true either. My father wore a size medium a few years ago and is now in a small. Measured togther, they are still the same size.
Bras are a mess. I have some old New Balance bras that fit like a glove but do not wick so they do not come out often. I found Moving Comfort Juno bra to be one of the better sport bra that I currently have. My favorite was a C9 from Target that wicked like mad and cost less than $5. I may pick up another.

And, though I'm only 5'5", I'd rather have slightly too long than too short... unless they are SUPPOSED to be capris! ;)
I don't seem to mind a little bit of bunching at my ankles.

I have always wondered this....like we need to know where it goes? And we need any indication of what's there? Maybe it's just the cheaper fabric for the inner layer.

I have insane jealousy for those of you that are tall...I'm just an oddly proportioned thing so I've long adjusted to having to tinker to get things where either I want them or where they're supposed to be. Almost ALL straps on ANYTHING are too long - apparently I'm really short from my ribcage to my shoulders - who knew? Maybe I've just got too much bulk in places where I apparently shouldn't. And compression shorts are ALWAYS my friend.

The bra thing I can't help on...I'm a fan of the Champion target bras simply because they're easily accessible. They don't support me well enough when I run (C) but luckily I don't like to do that much. =) My biggest problem is the cutting in that happens on my lats from the bands of them. The other few ones that I've passed along had the bottom band that was too tight & I couldn't breathe! I think the quest for a good bra can wind up as individual as a bike fit.

Eeh, I'd trade some of my leg length for an honest-to-gawd torso. My shoulders and hips practically touch, which means tops don't fit right and every extra ounce around my middle looks like 20lbs. Add in really wide shoulders and long arms with more muscle than most women (built more like a hockey player than a triathlete) and finding clothing that just doesn't look ridiculous becomes damn near impossible.

Cheers!

Teenaged me with no boobs would have KILLED for something that pushed up and padded. I think I wore a normal bra under my sports bra in tennis in high school to make it look like I had something there.

Currently c-cup me sais "STRAP EM IN AND LET'S BOOGIE!" I would like a little less see-through-ness on the nipply areas, though... or is that just because I took up training in October and have never run a race where I'm warm?

Hi ladies! Trying to get out of my lurker habit :) - easy to do with a thread like this one!
Why white gussets... and white running short liners?!? I understand white liners for light colored shorts, but on darker/black shorts (easily, 75% of all running shorts I've ever owned)... black liner. Please.

Agreed! Same thing here. About 2" between my hip bones & ribcage....which creates a very high natural waist! Definitely agree on the long arms too. Broad shoulders, lo arms, short torso & a long femur.....maybe I just should've been a monkey?

MDiane630, I use the Shock Absorber Pump Sports Bra. It doesn't create a uniboob, provides great support for my nearly flat breasts, and my headlights aren't on... it has a thin triangle shaped piece of neoprene-like insert that you can easily put in/take out. It doesn't make me any bigger, though. I don't like my nipples showing because it draws unwanted looks. (Although I go braless with a trisuit in a race--that's different!)

My beefs with it are that the shoulder straps are too shallow (I'm built like a football player in the shoulder area, thank swimming!) and it can be hard to wrestle on when you're wet. But I liked it so much that I bought... like... EIGHT of them when they were on sale! Yeah, they're expensive though at $60 (edited: can buy them on Wiggle.com for $32). They last FOREVER despite frequent washings.

I posted sth a while ago wondering if the manufacturers of women's sports clothing have ever seen a woman from a close range http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=4070445.

My main complaints are:
Built in bras - the strap that is meant to be below the breasts runs usually nicely across my C size, producing a very weird appearance
Womens shorts are always too tight on the thighs. I have to use men's. And (at least I think) I am quite normal bulid
Most of the sleeves and trousers are too short to really earn the title of long sleeves (or trousers)

Drawstrings are just tedious but easy to ignore, at least for me.

Built in bras. For a chick who needs more support, they shrink the size of the top and add very strange lines to my boobs as I still have to wear a sport's bra/bra.

Tops and bottoms now seemed to be made for people with guts. Fits in the shoulders and boobs, huge in the waste. Fits the thighs, huge in the waist. I get that larger people have guts but when folks aren't big, their stomach proportions are not the same and they need to be changed.

Pink sport's wear. Perhaps it is just wear I live but female sport's wear is overly pink and "cute". I don't want hearts, polka dots, piping or anything other crappy "girlie" design on my sport's clothing.

Bring back the damn two piece speedo and Nike sport bathing suits. Where the hell did they go??? LOVED them due to the better boob support than a one piece but they seem to have gone the way of the dinosaurs.

Chicks with boobs also like bikinis. Can we get some with support and a little more coverage? I don't feel comfortable looking like a porn star when at the beach. I have seen more than a few questionable chesty chicks who clearly needed more support and coverage.

Drawstrings that are so short you end up losing them in the waistband and then have to do the old safety pin and drawstring trick on a regular basis.

Clothes that are label quick wick, water replant.. that clearly are not.

Oh, I had really already forgotten the two piece Speedos.... I managed to lose the bottom of my two piece years ago on a trip and I have not found a replacement since. I would also like to have a good twopiece (but not bikinis) to use under the wetsuit because often there are no changing facilities where I swim and it is a lot easier to wriggle out from a twopiece and get dressed trying to hide yourself between the car and a towel.

For the bikinis, I really recommend Triumph (I have had three last bikini sets from this brand) - underwear manufacturers have a way better understanding of the variation of cup size and corresponding requirements for support compared to sports/leisure wear manufacturers. The first two sets I got were without padding, really great. For the last set, I had to buy a padded one, although I do not need any padding and after swimming it is really idiotic to have a sponge-like wet bra on. But still, Triumph is the best.
