Cyst on ovary experience
Back in early February, I was doing some sprint work on the track and felt something 'pop' in my lower left quadrant. Anytime I tried to do any abdominal workouts, it hurt..... ALOT. I made an appt. to see a doctor but I couldn't get in until just last Monday. The pain somewhat subsided over the months, and I competed in four tris and did pretty good (I'm a newbie). My last race, a sprint was terrible! (1:18) I had abd. pain on the bike and the run. Turns out I have a small cyst on my left ovary. I have never had 'female issues' so this took me by surprise. My gyn. wants to do a vaginal ultrasound to find out more. I'm trying to stay calm, but everything I read online ranges from 'it's nothing' to it could be 'ovarian cancer!' Yikes! I have been battling debilitating fatigue at times for about six months now, so I'm thinking this is all related. Anyone have an experience like this? I've stopped training all together to keep from irritating the area until I find out what needs to be done. Not training is making for one grumpy girl.

My only experience with an ovarian cyst was back in '83-sharp abdominal pain and felt like crap. Went to MD who thought it was a ruptured appendix-one emergency surgery later he said it actually was a ruptured ovarian cyst and he might as well take out the appendix while he was there. Took off the cyst without issues but scarred down my ovary(oh well-no loss there).
Have to say todays medical knowledge is so much better and I wish you luck! I guess I had little to add as I read this over:)

A couple years ago I had an MRI done on my hips. My PCP, not my hip specialist, called me and said "incidentally, you have a cyst on your R ovary." They scheduled an ultrasound to check up on it in 8 wks and see if it were getting any larger. When I had the ultrasound, it had gone away. I never had any pain from it. Also, to my pleasant surprise, they just ran the ultrasound wand on the area between my hips like they'd do if you were pregnant. When I heard 'vaginal ultrasound' I had figured I was in for a pelvic exam.

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine
If you're injured and need some sympathy, PM me and I'm very happy to write back.

This. My wife has had ovarian cysts removed twice. It is likely a dermoid cyst and nothing to really worry about but you do have to have them removed via surgery.

How does Danny Hart sit down with balls that big?

i had this experience last year - definitely don't panic, it's likely not something crazy. mine turned out to be a 20cm dermoid cyst (monstrous!), had it removed surgically and was back on the bike in <2 weeks. ultrasound is definitely the place to start

Thanks everyone! I'm waiting to hear back from a gynecologist I was referred to. The pain's gotten worse. If I sit on the couch or lie down and do nothing than everything's okay. Ugh.

Whoa whoa cowboy!! You meant to say "it is likely NOT a dermoid cyst and nothing to really worry about". Dermoid cysts are a different animal altogether.
It is MOST likely an incidental finding of a SIMPLE/FUNCTIONAL cyst....and nothing at all to worry about.

And while im stuck on-call at the hospital...Rant on: ER docs/US techs/other specialists need to shut their pie holes and not make ridiculous comments on the fly without appropriate explanation and reassurance, thus leaving said poor lady scared to death. This is an everyday in my office consult after a long night spent by a woman in an ED. Unless you have imaging to suggest she may have pathology of significance, zip it. Non-GYN docs need to shut their pie holes and stop scaring my ladies! Rant off.

Definitely stay calm. Stress makes everything worse.

I had ovarian cysts that kept popping (and of course, they'd pick the WORST time to do so), and it turned out to be a very simple fix.

Yours probably will be, too.
