Breast Implants and Triathlon
I'm a very competitive triathlete thinking about getting breast augmentation this winter. I am also planning to go Pro next year so I'm really worried about the possible effect the surgery could have on my future athletic performance. I would hate to sacrifice strength, speed or endurance just for bigger boobs!

Can anyone give me some first-hand experience about this? I don't see any other top professional triathletes with fake boobs so I'm wondering if it's a bad idea.

Thanks!

They don't float. I learned that watching a "MANsers" marathon on Spike. ;-)

Seriously, as a D cupper (who drops to a C when training a lot), I can tell you that RUNNING with larger girls is a PITA. Unless you are going from AA to a B, that is if you are thinking of going to a C or D, I think you'll find they get in the way more than not. It may not be worth the hassle. Yer call of course.

Isn't there are long recovery period in which you cannot exercise after the surgery?

they're extra weight... that's not going to help any

just a thought.

edit - well, I don't know how much extra weight it'd be. But you know how when you start losing weight/body fat you wind up pretty much flat chested? I guess the upside is being able to do a whole race in just a one piece swimsuit...

ignore me, I don't really know what I'm talking about.

if you are thinking about implants, i am pretty sure you're not that serious about going pro. its extra weight, time off training etc. I don't know of a single pro that has implants, but go for it if you really feel it is necessary.

The only female pros I've heard getting implants are pro female bodybuilders who lose natural breast tissue with all the roids. Assuming you want them for self esteem issues rather than an actual medical reasons, only you can make that choice, but they aren't going to help with your triathlon times.

Can't believe I'm posting this...but why not.

I have had it done. The twins just had their 9th birthday. I lived in Las Vegas at the time, was in the air force and the air force has cosmetic surgeons who need to stay current on these things. $800 later, they were done.

Why? Because all through college I was a B cup. Then I went on some hormone treatment because the AF changed my BCP and the pill I was on wasn't right for me. So instead of special ordering my favorite pill, they just tried to adjust the hormones. My boobs grew. Then the AF realized how stupid the one air force, one birth control pill was and went back letting everyone be on what worked best for them. I went back on my favorite pill and my boobs shrunk. A LOT. That pill actually made me gain weight for a bit, but the boobs kept shrinking.

Anyway, I moved to Vegas and they had docs there who could 'fix' it. So I went for it.

I had the surgery on a Friday. Sunday I went for a 6 mile walk. By the next Friday I was on the eliptical (not using the arm things) and by two weekends later I was running. I took 3 weeks off from running. And I got on the eliptical a week before I supposed to and ran a week befor I was supposed to. Running felt VERY strange at first. The chest muscles (mine are under the muscle) would tighten up for about 2-3 minutes then relax.

The funny thing is that the 3 weeks off from running allowed my very bad/chronic IT Band injury to heal. So MY story is that a boob job healed my IT Band.

I've seen a lot more women than you would think at tris/marathons etc with them. Even a couple pros. Not the top pros, but I don't think it's the boobs that are holding them back.

A funny story: I was in the locker room about 2 months ago and a friend who I train with said to me. "How is it that you keep getting skinnier but your boobs still look great" She was shocked when I told her. As are most people. So find a good doctor who will make them look natural.

And to anyone who doesn't understand why....I equate cosmetic surgery to braces (for most of the population these are NOT needed) or getting your hair colored, wearing makeup, getting fake nails etc. I've never had braces, I don't wear makeup, or have fake nails and am going back to my natural hair color, but I've had a boob job...I'm not getting defensive either, it's just something that a lot of people wonder why? I say why not?

Would I be faster if I didn't have them? Who knows. I did set my 5K PR after few years after the surgery.

I was really tempted to tell your locker room story (anonymous on who it happened to, of course).

And, I'm sorry, but did you say $800??

Hmmm... If I recall correctly, you said that you don't have to be a US citizen to join the Airforce? lol

M- I would have thought the recovery was much longer. As a life long A cup, I do think about it but I'm definitely undecided. I think anyone who judges you about it needs to get a life by the way. Awesome deal you got btw!

I have no issues with the choice to get them, but what if you are one of the women who have a bad outcome? what if they harden and you scar around them? what if you get some sort of immune reaction?

there is a website - I think it is called awfulplasticsurgery.com or something like that.

look there first....

I gots no clue. I went the opposite direction, but my former F cups were causing some nasty back pains, headaches and seriously hampered my ability to get in the drops on my bike.

I work with a plastic surgeon. I'm a surgical tech. The weight of implants that size is minimal. If body image is important to you, go for it. As far as recovery, everyone is different. Just listen to your doc.

Why did they put them under your chest muscles? I always thought that the implants went over the chest muscles. I don't understand.

So I could 'flex' them?

I think it had to do with if I ever wanted to breastfeed. Which I was pretty sure I wouldn't (didn't/don't want kids), but why rule it out? I do remember discussing it with my doc, but I honestly can't remember the pros and cons (it was over 8 years ago), so I couldn't tell you why I made that decision.

I also think it was supposed to make them look more natural.

And then I asked to touch them :)

I will vouch for her, being the locker room friend. They're good ones.

Damn! In my mind I always subtract a few lbs for the boobs. You know, like how you subtract 5 lbs for clothes?

If you're seriously thinking about going pro next year, you should think about putting off this surgery until you make that decision. I would imagine that you could hold off one more year on the implants if you've come this far already. The two decisions will impact each other. Decide about going pro or not. Once you've made that decision, then decide about the implants. Good luck.
