Why did they put them under your chest muscles? I always thought that the implants went over the chest muscles. I don't understand.

They look more natural when under the muscles.

I'm still having issues with wrapping my head around it. My first thought is that if you put implants under the chest muscles, it would just look like she has bigger chest muscles instead of bigger boobs because I know that they do this type of plastic surgery for guys. I don't see how putting the implants under the chest muscles will actually increase the cup size. Maybe I'm thinking about boobs too much and should just shut up and enjoy them.

I don't think you're thinking about them too much. You should think about them. They are there for your enjoyment. But you are over-analyzing so, yes just shut up and enjoy them ;)

Let us know what you decide and how it goes. My husband and I have been talking about the same thing. I'm pretty competitive, not pro level, but I place in the smaller races and top 10% in the larger ones. I'm currently an A and would like to go up to a B or C cup. I am curious as to other athletes experiences before I move forward. It's not the weight I am concerned with, but the bounce factor. I stopped running when I became pregnant because the bounce and discomfort (soreness). I had gone up to a C cup. I wasn't sure if the discomfort was just because of being pregnant or that was normal with the size.

Thanks for sharing your experience PirateGirl :)

This thread cracked me up!

I was a "B" pre-triathlon, and have been "A" ever since. Would never consider implants, and hubby is dead set against it even if I did (He's mentioned this spontaneously a few times after me saying "oh, so-and-so got a boob job").

I'm so glad to see you posted this! I've been considering doing the same thing next year right after my ironman. I know a lot of women may look down on it but I am technically a 32AA - try to find a bra in that size! Shot, I have to wear a bra just so I look like I have boobs! I'm only wanting maybe Bs ... will probably still look small to many people but with my current size it is very difficult to get clothes to fit right. I'll be taking a bit of time off post ironman anyway. From everything I've read it can be up to ~6 weeks before you can do exercise like running and upper body weight training but I've heard of several women who have been able to start walking and light exercise fairly soon after. If you decided to do it please post how the recovery was! I highly doubt the extra weight will make a bit of performance difference. My only comment would be if you are going to do it, do it soon so the recovery period doesn't take up too much of your off season/winter base training time.

I know someone (who doesn't post on here) that is a top age grouper who had hers done several years ago. She was A cup and wanted a B cup. Unfortunately, she ended up with a C+ cup. I guess the doctor decided to enhance her request or something. Anyway, the biggest impact to her speed was in swimming because of the cutting of the pectoral muscles (inserts put under the muscles, like in Pirategirl's case). She ended up with a season of compensating in her stroke due to the surgery so slowed down a little. Next winter, she worked carefully on her stroke and did some other re-hab of the area and is just as fast as ever in the swim and even faster on the bike and run now (related to training, not the boob job). More recently, she became fed up with the C+ cup size and had the surgeon replace with a more natural-looking size. This particular surgery required a lot less recovery than the initial one.

I guess the lessons in her story for you would be:

1. Decide if potentially several weeks of recovery is consistent with your goal to go pro next year, or if you're willing to take the risk that your performance may be negatively impacted. Maybe it won't, but likely it will. It depends on your priorities and reasons for moving up to the pro field.
2. If you do get work done, make sure you communicate clearly with your surgeon about what your desired size is and that he/she better not do something different than what you request.

All my best!

They are there for your enjoyment.

Not to argue with that statement in general, but as a breastfeeding mother of an almost 2 month old, they aren't about my husband's enjoyment so much as provision of nutrients at baby's beck and call. In fact, I'd argue they don't belong to me at all these days, even though they happen to be attached to my chest.

OK. Sorry. Off topic! Back to the usual madness! :)

Wow! Like Eric, I am still trying to wrap my head around the "under the muscle" deal. I did not think that was possible. But this is crazy! The doc "enhanced" the size??? WTF??? I hope she did not pay for the "downsizing."

from what I heard this 'upsizing' is not extremely uncommon, quite some doctors also tend to push patients in getting more than they want because there is the perception that if you don't get a lot you're going to regret it.

Note: I have no personal experience with this, just watched a lot of shows on discovery health showing the various surgical procedures, it was quite fascinating just how things work (the most interesting I saw had the implants put in through the bellybutton, I kid you not) but then again I have had thoughts in the past to get into surgery so blood etc. don't bother me at all.

I also from what I understand don't believe the muscles are 'cut', they are just 'separated' from your ribcage to make enough space for the implant to sit in; if you actually cut the pectoral muscles it would take a lot more than a few weeks to recover!

I have heard that women are presured to go larger by the doc. But for the doc to simply upsize without consent has to be malpractice if not, arguably, assault. That is a little frightening.

I had one other question- moving the nipples. I have heard some people having this done so the placement on the breast looks more natural after gravity begins to take effect. Any experiences with this? I heard a couple of things through the grapevine- loss of sensation, etc. Is this a normal part of the procedure or is it optional?

it really depends from the anatomy too though, if you decide on 350cc implants then the doctor sits you up while you're under and they look really bad due to how your ribcage/muscles are, he puts in 100cc more and they look 'good', what is he supposed to do? It's not like he can wake you up and talk about it, his choice at that point is go for the agreed and have an unhappy patient or take a chance and have more than agreed upon.

I bet that in the paperwork that you sign before the surgery there is a clause saying that basically the doctor has the last call on what's going to happen, so of course picking the right one is paramount.
