Best Tunes for a Women Only Tri/Du?
Hi all. I’ve been asked to be the announcer at a triathlon/duathlon exclusively for women this summer in Michigan – Iron Goddess. I plan to have music playing over the PA system whenever I’m not making announcements or recognizing racers and I want to do what I can to help make it a fantastic time for all the women there – participants as well as spectators. I’ve heard the vibe at women only races is different than that experienced at the usual format (i.e. lots of first-timers, more supportive and social in general), but I’ve never thought about it in terms of music before now. What are your thoughts – is the ideal play list different from the one we typically hear at races? What songs do you think would be cool for this event? Thanks in advance for helping me create the play list!

We like the same music as boys do unless it calls women bitches or hos.

For fun, why not have an all woman play list? Lots of great chick rock to pick from. Please, no stuff you hear on the easy listening station.

Thanks Jen. I announced at the local kids tri for years and the idea for the kids was to have fun, upbeat tunes that had no obvious foul language. As for chick rock in that list, I had Bangles, Go Gos, B-52s, The Donnas, Sheryl Crow, The Pretenders, etc. I'll bet I could put together a major all women play list. Who are some of the current female rockers I should include?

First off, thanks for volunteering!

>>is the ideal play list different from the one we typically hear at races? <<

IMO, no. Like Jen said, we like the same music. On my personal race day list is a lot of Green Day. A lot. An all-chick rock list would drive me over the top. But I would definitely have some Pink, Lady Gaga and Shakira.

You're welcome, clm! I really enjoy doing it. Thanks for pointing me to some more current rockers. I'd like to ensure I have a little something for everyone. It's also comforting to know that upbeat positive music irrespective of gender is always welcome. Eva and Karen (Iron Goddess RDs) have set the race organization bar high in Michigan and I don't want to disappoint them! Also, last years announcer was legendary in this area (and beyond) and it will take extra effort to come close to filling even one of his shoes. Again, much obliged for your input.

I would recommend NOT playing the "Man!, I feel like a woman" song. They played that before the start of an all woman's wave and it was driving me crazy!

Anything with a good beat--same thing you would play at any other triathlon is what I would want.

I'll add to another NOT to play - Fat Bottom Girls. Not a good choice for a women's race. ;-) I have heard this played at a tri.

I LOVE Eye of the Tiger. LOVE IT. That played at mile 25 of my first marathon and that got me to the finish. If hear that song now, I get an instant spring in my step.

lol...
I'm afraid I love eye of the tiger too - I guess it was just the era I grew up in...

and I was a total 80s girl - LOVE Cyndi Lauper.
Pretty much anything alterna-80s puts me in a good mood - not that hair band stuff.

Fun 80's music too - Bangles, Eurythmics, etc. Yes, it's cheesy. But people always love that stuff.

Wow, I was away on business and not logged in for a few days and return to find a lot of suggestions! Thank you all for your help! I promise I will not include "Girls Just Want to Have Fun". I haven't listened to many of these bands, so I'm looking forward to checking them out.
