Asthma - Lab Guinea Pig

No improvement in my symptoms.
The dr. I see now is going to put me on the treadmill for an exercise challenge test. They will measure O2 consumption, breathing rate, determine lactate threshold, monitor heart rate and oh even measure lactic acid.
I'm definitely going to ask for a copy of all this data!

good luck; hope it goes well and would be interested to hear what you find.

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine
If you're injured and need some sympathy, PM me and I'm very happy to write back.

If you don't mind me asking, what symptoms are you having bringing you to this sort of testing?

I've been fighting with EIA for some time and I think I'm at the point where this sort of testing is my next step.

Basically riding along fine and then "blowing up" - tight chest, feel like I can't breathe, wheeze.
Dramatic slowdown in pace, when riding with a group I'm "dropped like a stone" to where there's no chance of catching back on.

I had a methacholine challenge test done in 2005 and the initial analysis was 'borderline for asthma'. My score was 19 and 20 and up gets you the asthma diagnosis. I found albuterol wasn't helping when I experienced symptoms. I just figured Oh well and stopped taking the albuterol. In 2008 I saw an asthma / allergy specialist because I had developed a weird aspirin allergy. She looked at my lungs, and the test from 05, and my "life" as a triathlete including 2 IMs and said, "I think you might really have asthma and not just be borderline"

I also finally got in touch with a dr who deals a lot with athletes. So therefore the treadmill test. Should be interesting.

That's sort of similar to what I would get when not medicated, except cycling was never enough to set it off. If I tried to run at all, that's what would happen. Fine one minute, lungs feel a little tweaked, then bam...not even able to talk. Now I mostly just start getting sharp pains in my lungs when I go a little too hard, which then proceeds to progressively slow me down.

I wish you luck in figuring it out. It's really frustrating to live with.

I have asthma, it was mild until 2 weeks ago when I was rushed to the hospital via ambulance in the middle of the night for a severe attack. I now take advair 2 x per day in addition to singulair, and zyrtec. I ran a PR at a 10 miler today and have never felt better. I wish you luck on your tests and hope you find some answers! I am going the allergy route with new blood tests to find my trigger...
