Another Blood Test Post

Hi -- I went to the doc for a sinus infection last week. I was desperate for relief and went to any doc I could find who would see me. She wound up doing a "full physical" since insurance pays for more that way.

I started the antibiotics and felt better. To my surprise the doc called Friday to say she was not happy with my bloods. It took me 5 days of phone tag (grr) to get back in touch but she finally told me what was wrong, Iron level.

I did not know what to ask about, specifically, but she said a value that is supposed to be a minimum of 30, my value is 12. She asked me if I have any idea why. I told her that I am a vegetarian. She did not think that would be the reason. She was asking me about heavy periods, I am age 45, I don't really get that much to speak of. I did not tell her that I did an Ironman this summer and a very long Du recently this fall. Her English isn't that great and I didn't think she would understand what an Ironman or Du is.

With that info...do these numbers make any sense to anyone? I actually feel pretty good (besides the recent sinus issue). Thanks to anyone with any info. As it stands now she wants me to take Iron supp's and get re-tested in a month. I already took a multi with Iron so I'm puzzled. Thx.

google on hematocrit or hemoglobin. i think that's what she's talking about. i tend toward anemia, and the doc has me on iron capsules. i don't eat red meat. there's some theory that endurance stuff tends to mangle the red blood cells. the physiologists on the forum would undoubtedly know more.

Thanks for your reply. I will try searching those two terms.

It just doesn't seem right to be so profoundly sub normal when I feel pretty decent. It wouldn't surprise me if the endurance events had somehow skewed the tests.

I have been on iron supp's before (>10 years ago), I was even given a prescription for special ones. But even then, I don't think I was this far off from "Normal" levels. Well, we are re-testing in a month so we shall see. Thx again for commenting.

it is likely your ferritin - iron stores that is the issue.
hematocrit that low you would not be upright and would need a transfusion.
hemoglobin high end of range is 12
