Three out of four Americans will be overweight or obese by 2020

Please check out the article pasted below. Does anyone else find this depressing? More than anything, this apparent lack of self control or eating, instant gratification and personal entitlement to be lazy makes me question how long before our civilization is overtaken by one that is more disciplined. _____________________________________________________________________________

Number of fat people in US to grow, report says
By Greg Keller, The Associated Press
PARIS - Citizens of the world’s richest countries are getting fatter and fatter and the United States is leading the charge, an organization of leading economies said Thursday in its first ever obesity forecast.
Three out of four Americans will be overweight or obese by 2020, and disease rates and health care spending will balloon, unless governments, individuals and industry co-operate on a comprehensive strategy to combat the epidemic, the study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said.
The Paris-based organization, which brings together 33 of the world’s leading economies, is better known for forecasting deficit and employment levels than for measuring waistlines. But the economic cost of excess weight — in health care, and in lives cut short and resources wasted — is a growing concern for many governments.
Franco Sassi, the OECD senior health economist who authored the report, blamed the usual suspects for the increase.
“Food is much cheaper than in the past, in particular food that is not particularly healthy, and people are changing their lifestyles, they have less time to prepare meals and are eating out more in restaurants,” said Sassi, a former London School of Economics lecturer who worked on the report for three years.
That plus the fact that people are much less physically active than in the past means that the ranks of the overweight have swelled to nearly 70 per cent in the U.S. this year from well under 50 per cent in 1980, according to the OECD.
In 10 years, a full 75 per cent of Americans will be overweight, making it “the fattest country in the OECD,” the report said.
The same factors driving the epidemic in the U.S. are also at work in other wealthy and developing countries, Sassi said. “There is a frightening increase in the epidemic,” Sassi said, “We’ve not reached the plateau yet.”
The lifespan of an obese person is up to 8-10 years shorter than that of a normal-weight person, the OECD said, the same loss of lifespan incurred by smoking.
In the U.S. the cost in dollars of obesity, including higher health care spending and lost production, is already equivalent to 1 per cent of the country’s total gross domestic product, the report said. That compares to half a per cent in other OECD countries, Sassi said.
These costs could rise two- or threefold over the coming years, the OECD said, citing another study that forecast obesity and overweight-related health care costs would rise 70 per cent by 2015 and could be 2.4 times higher than the current level in 2025.
The OECD found that rates of obesity, defined as a body mass index above 30, show a wide variation across its member countries, ranging from as little as 3-4 per cent of the population in Japan and Korea to around one-third in the U.S. and Mexico.
“However, rates are also increasing in these countries,” the OECD said. Outside the OECD, obesity rates are rising at similarly fast rates in countries such as Brazil, China, India and Russia.
The OECD advises governments on economic growth, social development and financial stability.

Mom always said I was ahead of my time. I’m there 10 years early.

“Does anyone else find this depressing?”

Somewhat, but I’m not nearly as depressed as I would be if I mistakenly interpreted that as meaning that I personally had a 75% chance of being overweight or obese by 2010. I do care about the people around me, though, and if I can help them in a constructive way to adopt a healthier lifestyle, I try to do so.

"unless governments, individuals and industry co-operate on a comprehensive strategy to combat the epidemic"

Only a government bureaucrat could dream up a phrase like “obesity epidemic.” In order to avoid unwittingly contracting this disease, I think it’s of vital importance that we avoid proximity to obese people, wash our hands immediately after shaking hands with them, and hold a handkerchief over our mouths and noses when holding a conversation with them. And whatever you do, don’t get involved in any exchange of body fluids with them!!!

Since BMI is not a measure of % of body fat and can call someone only reasonable muscular overweight due to the muscle weighing more than fat I think it is BS measure. Yes there are tons of really fat people out there, but the cheaper food prices not only include fats but also protein. I think people, even fat people, are carrying around way more muscle than they used and I haven’t seen anything to suggest this has been accounted for in the BMI charts.

Not unless you’ve filled out a lot since I last saw you!

I checked my BMI according to the formula the other day and I was very close to the obese scale. Maybe I should post a pic in my speedo to show you what “obese” can look like. It is enough to give me a complex.

The lifespan of an obese person is up to 8-10 years shorter than that of a normal-weight person, the OECD said, the same loss of lifespan incurred by smoking.

But an active, athletic person who smokes will outlive a sedentary obese non-smoker person by 8-10 years.

A definition of “epidemic” is a the rapid increase or spread of something, or simply “widely prevalent.” While commonly used to describe infectious disease, the term actually greatly pre-dates the development of modern infectious disease theory by hundreds of years.

So the term is accurate. If obesity is becoming “widely prevalent” then “obesity epidemic” would be an accurate way to describe it.

I would say that in the LR there is an epidemic of taking mundane statements and twisting them to fit ones own cherished political beliefs.

On the positive side, think how hot that will make the rest of us look!

So are you saying that a significant portion of those with a BMI > 30 are body builders, or you you just making a nit point that there is a flaw in an easy to use measurement system?

If I had to guess, the statistics that say that an obese person lives 10 years shorter use BMI and don’t perform body fat tests on every corpse.

My first thought was “maybe then I’ll be able to win my AG!”
.

Yeah, I figured someone would belabor that point (sigh).

I know quite well what the word means. I also know what its connotations are.

It doesn’t matter which definition of epidemic either of you choose, because it’s a moot point. Look around; by this point, obesity has become endemic.

Big deal. By 2020, our diets will consist of 75% acai berries, and accai berry products. And we all know acai berries are the key to a flat stomach.

I agree with the sentiment that BMI accounts for some of these people, but those people who are actually obese due to BMI but have low bodyfat levels probably only account for about 10-15% of these people, meaning there are still 60-65% of people who are actually obese due to bodyfat. The overweight classification is a highly different area, and really needs to be revamped, because being above 25 BMI is so common, even for healthy individuals.

I think 10-15% is awfully generous.

Maybe 10% of BMI>30.0 15-22 year olds are low body fat. But not the entire population. At least 98% of all 6’ men who weight more than 222lbs don’t have a low body fat %…

Here’s the comprehensive strategy: Put down the fucking cheeseburger and eat a salad. Then do some fucking exercise.

This is not rocket science. There are a few people out there with medical conditions that this strategy will not work for, but I can’t imagine it’s more than 5% of the population. I am nowhere near the healthiest eater and nowhere near the biggest exerciser and yet somehow, by doing a little of both, I’m also nowhere near being a disgusting fatbody.

“Three out of four Americans will be overweight or obese by 2020”

Cool! Thanks.

It’s about time I heard news that something was improving in this country.

(In North Idaho, I bet we’re already over 3 out of 4 overweight. It’s kind of depressing and frightening.)

** Put down the fucking cheeseburger and eat a salad. Then do some fucking exercise. **

Can I just skip to the 2nd part? Because I honestly don’t think I’m physically capable of putting down a fucking cheeseburger to eat a salad.

Word.

“Obesity Epidemic” is a phrase invented by liberals to advance their bullshit socialist ideology = to limit sodium intake, transfats, sugar intake and consumption of Red Meat. The goal is to turn the population into a bunch of pussified Vegan liberal robot sheep. Think I am joking? There is a school district here in the US where kids use a ‘debit-card’ to scan their lunch purchases. If those purchases are too much pizza and chocolate milk, those kids are penalized and brought in for ‘counseling’ by the liberal intelligensia for making ‘unwise meal choices’
