Campy 10 speed chain SUCKS !!!!
Hi guys,

Does anyone ever have a problem with the campy 10 spd chain ???

I love Campy... but today in my longest ride in prep for the IM Brazil ( 180KM ) my chain broked at the permalink... ( 35km from the start )... I got a bus on the road for the next city and a friend helped me there with a ride to home....

When you do long rides it´s all about confidence.... and trust on the bike components...
Did I just have bad luck or this chain really sucks ???

Tks

I've broken two campy chains at the perma link. I now use wipperman (sp?) 10 sp chains.

Luis, I have been riding Campag 10 speed on my race bike and training bikes since 2000 and (touch wood) have never had a problem with a chain, or any other component.

I guess you were just unlucky.

When are you travelling down to Florianopolis, early enough to ride the escorted course ride on the Sunday before? It would be good to meet up.

I did a 200k ride two weeks ago, and will do another next weekend but the run has been giving me problems. I lost 3 months to a hamstring injury so am not as well prepared as I would like but do we ever go into a race feeling adequately prepared? Good luck on the 4th.

Adeus.

I have never used Campy chains (which I have read are even not made by Campagnolo at all, but by another company). But I think the problem is not with the chain exactly but with the 'perma-link'. Almost all of those type of chain connector links are plagued with breakage problems. Get rid of it and use a chain tool to connect the chain together permanently.

I Luiz,

Let me tell you something we learned the hard way: These chains MUST be installed 100% in compliance with the written instructions. When we do that- no trouble- if we don't, BANG! busted chain.

We've seen similar things with Shimano. When you read the directions you discover the chain is only designed to rotate one way- it is directional and you must install the chain using a "pulling" or trailing pin, not a forward or "pushing" pin. For clarification see the written instructions that come with the Shimano and Campagnolo chains for installation.

I wonder if that may be a contributing factor in your case?

Leng,

Sorry to hear of your unfortunate experience.

I ride Campy Chorus 10 spd triple. I use Sram 89R chains per my LBS recommendation. I have broken 2 chains in more than 10 years of riding 4-6,000 miles per year. I carry a Park CT-5 in my seat bag and a spare "perma-link" too. The second time I broke a chain, I was back on the road in about five minutes. I took out the broken link and put the chain back together with the spare "perma-link," the chain then had two perma-links in it. I replaced the chain when I got home. I bet the time I have "lost" on group rides, centuries, and multi-day tours because of the extra weight I carry because of these tools is not nearly as great as the time you lost today because you couldn't make a repair to get yourself home on your bike. Sounds to me as if your just moving up the learning curve.

A chain costs less than a new tire (Continental Grand Prix 3000). When we ruin a tire on the road because of a sidewall cut or have a flat, we don't rant on ST because of a tire failure. We carry the necessary tools and supplies to make "on the road" repairs and get ourselves back home. Why wouldn't the same be true of our chains?

When you consider what a chain goes through in terms of stresses over its "lifetime" compared to all other bicycle components, is an occasional chain failure unreasonable to expect? BTW, how often do you replace your chain and how do you determine if it is worn to the point of replacement? I would be surprised if most chain failures didn't occur on chains that already were "worn" out.

Now all this probably sounds cold and unsympathetic. Its not really meant to be so harsh but I personally feel as if you've just learned one of the lessons of "Zen and the Art of Bicycle Maintenance" the hard way, the same way many of us before you have similarly learned. Educate yourself and equip yourself to overcome these minor obstacles and get back to riding your bike. This was just a "bump" in the road of bicycle life.

I think Campagnolo is a couple of generations past the "Perma-Link" and now uses a ShimaNO-like connection. I've broken one Campagnolo chain and I am disfigured from it. I still ride Campagnolo chains, but I use their later version.
