At sea for 6 months, what 5 CDs do you bring?
I'm getting ready to deploy for about 6 months (assuming no extension). Assuming you have limited space, so you can't bring your entire 8 track collection, and assuming you don't have an iPod, if you could only pick 5 CDs/Albums/tapes, which would they be? I'm not looking for the greatest 5 albums of all time, but the 5 albums you'd bring with you (could be because they are really good music, or are the best workout music, or whatever reason). I'm moving all my CDs to my iPod and looking to plug any holes in the collection. My latest addition was an album by Seu Jorge of acoustic Bowie songs in Portugese (tied to The Life Aquatic). Good stuff.

Heh, heh....I've been through this one and this was before mp3 players, etc. I took a couple of compilation or greatest hits CDs and 3 others appropriate for that era (early-to-mid 90s: Soundgarden, "Superunknown"; Pearl Jam, "10"; and Judas Priest "Live" (I know, I know...so kill me, already, but I loved "Green Manalishi").

Today? That's much tougher, segmented as the biz is now. Maybe Incubus, System Of A Down, Schism, 311, and the Cream reunion CD (Live at the Royal Albert Hall).

As I said, I've already got the iPod and I'm moving my collection there as we speak. Just looking to fill any gaps.

Also, we have limited internet, but no downloading (too much bandwidth)

Radiohead - OK Computer
Beatles - White Album
And You Will Know Us By The Trail of the Dead - Worlds Apart
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Led Zeppelin - IV

Damn, this list is tough. Here are another 5:

Delerium - Poem
Pearl Jam - Ten
Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See
Sigur Ros - Takk
Kent - Hagnesta Hill (this is my newest musical discovery)

Looking at this, my musical tastes are quite ecclectic. The only mainstream bands are Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, and Beatles.

I'd probably replace that Chris Isaak Forever Blue with the new Greatest Hits CD.

I did 110 days at sea commercial fishing in the 80s . Sometimes swapping CD's with the crew helps. I always liked music to wind you up - rock -Mo town -old school and some to slow you down mellow stuff - slow jazz .

I would buy a good set of headphones ,with a good ear cup seals , good enough to block out P.A. noises - crew conversations - machinery sounds , in your off hours.

time out of mind - dylan

el producto - walk mink

no room - the samples

96 degrees in the shade - third world

after the goldrush - neil young

....and nice call on forever blue - that is a great album.

Freedom just around the corner for you. But with the truth so far off, what good will it do?
