What is float and degrees of float in the clipless pedals?? bit of an ignorant cyclest here.

"Float" is the movement of the shoe on the horizontal plane. Some cyclists need a certain amount of float to help aleviate knee pain (or pain in other joints). Older Look pedals had two different cleats. The black cleats had no float, they locked in and that was it. Look also had a red cleat that allowed I believe 15 degrees of float. Later, Look came out with a pedal that the user could adjust the float for several different increments: 0, 3, 9 and 15 degrees. Some systems, such as Speedplay Zeros, have an adjustment on the cleat itself that allows the user to set the float in any amount between 0 and 15 degrees.
