Out of all the lake swims I’ve done in Florida, that one was the least worrisome, I think because there were so many people swimming at once. Plus I remember that lake being fairly clean/clear.

Most floridian triathletes know that if they swim in a large group then the gators should be spooked. Red Hills Triathlon has taken place in Lake Hall in Tallahassee for many years and it should still have a few orientation group swims for safety. Not many people in the know would go in there alone to prep.

I’ll probably get in trouble, but last couple of years, saw several gators watching NCAA womens rowing practices before season finale in May. Tasty morsels. What amazes me is I run/bike around the lake and notice the water fowl. They hatch their ducklings and raise them in water’s edge grasses and plants. Somehow most of them survive and you see them grow, hanging out in same spots day in and day out. How they avoid the gators and rowing skulls is a mystery?

This is a friend of mine. He'll recover fine and be back to kicking my ass in triathlon I'm sure. You really won't meet a nicer guy that has nothing but compliments for people. I've shared water with Alligators and Sharks here in Florida. I'm still way more afraid of Sharks than Alligators.

Man, it actually looks like he goes right at his head. Hopefully it wasn't!

I just watched a video on FB of a shark swimming in close to beach hanging out around people who are wading in the water talking and had no idea the shark was there. It was also caught on a drone. If drones don't already have some type of alarm on them, they need to add it-so bystanders can be alerted.

Because that would never be abused by teenage boys.

Alligators usually don’t bother them unless you jump on their back.

Edit: I tried to upload the photo of my alligator encounter four years ago but I can’t get it to work right now. I’ll work more on it In a bit.

When I did FL 70.3 in 2016 alligators were all I thought of for the whole swim. I hope the guy recovers - that would definitely make me not do any ows in FL lakes.

I would love to do this race but the fear of that happening is too strong. And the websites doesn't address how they keep any gators away or any safety precautions. Do they talk about it race day?

Races with ocean swims don’t talk about how they’ll keep the sharks away either. If they felt there was any danger what so ever, there wouldn’t be a race there. If you want to do this race, go ahead, sign up and enjoy, you’ve go nothing to worry about.
