It's full of too many people like the governor. Just a few tidbits about him:

In college he was a member of a fraternity known for its use of Confederate imagery and there is a photo in the Auburn yearbook of him dressed in a Confederate miliitary uniform at a frat party. Of course, he now "regrets it".

He opposes the expansion of TennCare (the state's Medicaid program).

He signed into law a school voucher bill that takes public school money and gives it to families sending their kids to private schools. Thank goodness it was ruled unconstitutional.

In August 2020, he signed into law a bill increasing the severity of penalties for a number of protest-related offenses. Most notably, it reclassifies camping in a tent outside the Tennessee State Capitol from a misdemeanor to a felony offense punishable by up to six years in prison.

He supports capital punishment and there have been 6 people executed under his tenure.

He loosened Tennessee's handgun law, allowing "concealed-carry-only" handgun permits to be obtained without requiring applicants to show an ability to fire a weapon. [THIS MAKES A WHOLE LOT OF FUCKING SENSE!!!!!]

Last year he signed into law a "permitless carry" bill which allows most adults 21 and older (as well as military personnel ages 18–20) to carry handguns (open and concealed) without a background check or required training. [THIS ALSO IS FUCKING RIDICULOUS]

He did not recognized Biden as president elect UNTIL JANUARY 8, 2021!

He created an office devoted to "faith-based" initiatives, and declared October 10 an official voluntary day of prayer and fasting.

He proposed a bill to ban abortion as early as six weeks into pregnancy and signed it into law but it's been blocked by a federal judge. We know what will happen if they overturn Roe v. Wade.

He supports allowing religious foster care and adoption agencies to prohibit same-sex married couples from adopting children.

He signed into law a bill that assures continued taxpayer funding of faith-based foster care and adoption agencies even if they exclude LGBT families and others based on religious beliefs.

He signed legislation banning transgender athletes from participating in sports opposite to their biological sex.

He signed legislation that forces businesses who serve transgender customers equally with restrooms to display warning signs that they do so. A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction blocking the enforcement of the law (violation of First Amendment).

He opposes medical marijuana legislation and marijuana decriminalization.

Throughout the pandemic, he opposed a statewide mask mandate and "touted Tennessee for being one of the last to close early in the pandemic and among the first to reopen."

He opposed vaccine mandates and said it was a personal choice. In November 2021, he signed a bill into law that restricted the ability of localities to implement public health restrictions, such as mask mandates.

He has said he will run for re-election next year and is endorsed by Trump.

He's a big church goer and the (now former) pastor of his church was conveniently in Washington, D.C. on January 6, 2021.

It's interesting how they try to back away from it, "we don't expect it to be enforced very often"
Or maybe that's a dog whistle for we only expect the police to enforce the law on brown people.

But in all seriousness, I could only hope a law like this wouldn't be Constitutional if challenged.

Yes, it seems hard to understand what could motivate such callousness...

"The felony charge is punishable by up to six years in prison and the loss of voting rights."

Wow. Does Tennessee still allow poor people to vote? Well, then. No wonder. With GOP control of both houses and the governorship, this is not so surprising at all.

Which court? The one that came out with a ruling that while you may be innocent and may have had a bad lawyer, that is no reason we can't fry you anyway...

That court? The court that just took a dump on the 6th amendment?

https://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Justice/2022/0524/Supreme-Court-rules-against-prisoners-on-poor-representation-claims#:~:text=The%20U.S.%20Supreme%20Court%20ruled,the%20grounds%20of%20ineffective%20counsel.

Just par for the course now, rich people get good lawyers, poor people get overworked public defenders...so it will only be the poor that are effected.

There is no reason to have faith in this court...

None.

More Tennessee bullshit. This is east TN.

The mother of a Hawkins County eighth-grader says in a lawsuit filed this week that her son was repeatedly subjected to racially-motivated attacks, and the school system did nothing to stop them.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Greeneville Tuesday, details a slew of racially-motivated attacks by white students, at least three of which were recorded by the students and posted on social media. Erika Qualls contends in the lawsuit she repeatedly sought help from administrators at Church Hill Middle School and Hawkins County Director of Schools Matt Hixson, but they either ignored or downplayed her complaints.

“(Qualls’ son) was regularly subjected to a pervasive, racially-hostile school environment in which he was repeatedly referred to by the ‘N-word’; subjected to a barrage of other racial epithets, such as ‘monkey’; shown hate-based depictions of a KKK member holding a torch and noose; taunted as the brunt of a ‘slave auction’; chased and ridiculed with a stuffed monkey; and shown depictions of African-American caricatures being stabbed and shot,” the lawsuit stated.

UPDATE:

First of all, the yahoo who brought this legislation is a hillbilly from the middle of nowhere 112 miles east of Nashville.

Per the editor of the TN Lookout:

The law, which prohibits camping on public property, is designed to target Tennessee's homeless individuals. One of the bill's legislative sponsors tells Stock he's noticed a rise in the number of homeless individuals in his White County community. Given the proximity to the popular recreational area, the Bridgestone Centennial Wilderness Area, we have to wonder if he's confusing homeless individuals with—you know—campers.

From the follow-up article...

Quote:
Governor wants alternatives to homeless camping prohibition despite letting law take effect

Despite concerns about the bill, Lee allowed the measure to become law without his signature, continuing his refusal to veto legislation.

That means homeless people who sleep on park benches or gather in encampments on public property could be arrested and charged with a felony, based on the legislation championed by Sen. Paul Bailey, a Sparta Republican, and Rep. Ryan Williams, R-Cookeville.

The new law baffles homeless advocates, especially in the Nashville area, where officials dedicated a multi-million-dollar project Tuesday for a homeless housing construction project.

Judith Tackett, who once ran Metro Nashville’s homeless division, is among those trying to figure out why the law is needed. Metro Nashville has about 1,900 homeless people on any given day.

“There are already laws in place. Why did the Legislature feel that they had to slap, now, a family, pretty much making it illegal for people experiencing homelessness to exist?” Tackett says.

Tackett, who hit a wall when she spoke against the legislation during committee, contends it made no sense to further “criminalize” people who are struggling to survive.

I think someone needs to tell them that putting someone in prison is much more expensive than just giving them someplace to live.
