Ever heard of a derecho?
Never heard of it before today.

https://www.thestar.com/...ogist-weighs-in.html

Saturday afternoon I got a message on my cell phone saying that severe weather was imminent and to take cover. I was at a grocery store with my sons, we were just checking out so I didn't think too much of it. Came outside and the clouds were super dark and heading our way.

Anyway, drove home and went inside. A few minutes later the storm hit and man, it was short but nasty. The power went out and was off for the next 18 hours or so. Trees down everywhere.

We went to the inlaws yesterday and just saw carnage the whole way to their place. At one point I saw about 10 hydro poles in a row that were just snapped in half.

No damage on our property, seeing all the damage we did see made me appreciate how lucky we were.

Yes. In 2020 there was a huge derecho in Iowa. Damage estimated around 7 billion I think. Before that, had never heard of it.

In June 2012 I was driving I-70 west through Ohio. I saw this giant wall of a thunderstorm looming ahead of me. When it hit it nearly picked my car up off the highway. Tractor trailers near me were flipped over. There was wreckage for miles.

That was a derecho.

Edit to add: This is the storm I drove through: https://en.wikipedia.org/...rth_American_derecho

I am guessing that our was on the milder end of the dericho spectrum.

However a local brewery that had it's roof ripped off might beg to differ.

Here's some damage from Uxbridge (a town about 25 minutes north of here)

Derecho. Like Spanish for "straight" because they cause straight-line wind damage.

I have never heard of that kind of storm before. I’m really glad you arrived home before the storm hit.

Yep. Been ~10 years or so, but I remember it well because I rode my bike to work that day. I was about 3 miles from work and saw the dark wall of clouds closing fast. Hauled ass, but got caught in it with about a mile to go - wind was coming from my right, and I felt like I was leaning my bike about 45 degrees into it to keep from getting blown over while being pelted with sideways rain. Made it to work and the storm was over pretty soon after that. Riding home was crazy - storm damage and downed trees everywhere. When I got home, it looked like my entire backyard was about 5 feet deep in downed trees/branches.

Milk in bags and water lines on poles? Do you guys live in the upside down?

To be a derecho it has to be 400kms from tip to tip. The power of weather is always amazing isn't it.

The one that hit Iowa bulldozed thousands of acres of corn, that is what drove the damages up so high.

Hydro is what we call electricity. I know, I know...

Yep, back in the 80's one came through and obliterated several woodlots around us. All straight line winds. We watched a corn crib go bouncing across the field and the tree in front of the house had the top thrown about 50 feet, we instantly decided it was time to head to the basement.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

Sure have. We had one in May 2020, just TWO DAMNED MONTHS after the tornado that hit here. There were at least 130,000 without power.

Went through one in 2012 in Charlottesville. We were lucky with only a few hours power loss. 3 blocks north was 3 days to restore power, 7 days for phone/ cable service. 2.5 million without power.

Derecho. Like Spanish for "straight" because they cause straight-line wind damage.

And because they are straight-line winds, you can't count on filing an insurance claim for tornado damage

Much like people were not able to make "hurricane" claims after Sandy because it was downgraded just before making landfall, but cause just as much damage as a hurricane

Hilarious. The town is offering free wood chips.

Plenty more trees to chip up still. If you need wood chips, come to Whitby.
