Wahoo kickr overheated

Did a session on the turbo. 2h in erg mode starts acting crazy. The wheel is super hot. Has never happened before. Any ideas?

You say wheel. So folks who know more than I do can help, do you mean the metal flywheel on a Core or Kickr, the belt drive wheel plate on a Core or Kickr, or the tire and wheel part of a Kickr Snap? Are you using the Wahoo's power reading for control or using your on-bike power meter?

When I've done sessions on my the Core, it can get pretty warm on the big flywheel.

I've also had issues with Zwift dropping out my power meter on-bike when I used to try that to be "consistent" on power with outdoors versus using the trainer's power. When it had connection issues, it would drop out and erg or normal go crazy.

If it is Zwift, I've also had issues sometimes turning on my phone's bluetooth to connect to headphones before Zwift has paired the Core. The Core also is in the phone's memory from using the Wahoo app to do spindown so guess there was a fight for the connection or something. To avoid now I always turn stuff on and let Zwift get connections first, then setup my music. When I had this issue, the Core would sometimes act like it was losing bluetooth in the ride and cause erg/sim issues.

Thanks for your respone. I mean the metal flywheel on a kickr. Sorry for the ambiguity. I didnt think things through properly as I am on a kickr with a casette. Regarding power I use the wahoo kickr linked to the wahoo fitness app on my phone via bluetooth and I dont use zwift.

If I understand you corretcly the connection issues/misreadings arent necessarily due to the warm flywheel?

I have no experience with this, but a few questions.
1. What was your average workload?
2. Were you in the big or small chainring?
3. Intervals / fluctuating power or relatively constant?

Assuming there isn't an actual issue with the unit, I could see a combination of small chainring (more torque) + higher, constant, power = higher strain on the load generator.

Just a thought.

I have a newer 2021 Kickr; No problems with the trainer "acting crazy" but after riding (zwift or else) the outside of the load generator/fly wheel does get BURNING hot for me too;

So I guess my point is, on my experience of N=1, how hot the flywheel becomes is not an indicator / explanation of the erratic behavior you are seeing after a while.. although there is a chance it is still related to heat.

p.s. I've hit the thermal overload once climbing Alpe in Zwift at high power, the unit lost all resistance till it cooled down. To avoid this happening in critical situations (vEveresting, race ending w Alpe) I've put a small fan aimed at the trainer.. hasn't happened since.

1. When it happened: 280w. Avg at that point: 262w.
2. The small ring. Trainer was in Erg mode and 60rpm.
3. Switching back and forth between 230w and 280w in Erg mode.

Will try a fan on the fly wheel!

This seems in-line with my scenario, considering you are in ERG mode, might be worthwhile to complete in the Big-Ring.

The reduced torque will require less resistance at the flywheel, thus less induction / less electrical current / less heat.
