As I posted on my IG yesterday, "with our gym closing at the end of the month - just in time for Summer - I've had to off and find another joint to get my sweat on. However, in order to do what is best for me and my training, this has led me to sell out and go corporate = @planetfitness . I will do my best to maintain the high standards of #screamingtortiseathleticclub #screamingtortiseac and fuck things up a little, in my own best way"

I gotta tell you though... that hydro massage chair is fucking awesome

A friend of mine then responded that he got banned for doing a max heart rate test run on the treadmill. "Apparently running at top speed with the incline all the way up is intimidating to other members"

So, we'll see

ETA: I'll be updating the "Denizens of the Gym" thread(s) as the situation arises, but from what I saw on my little tour yesterday, there don't seem to be to many 'weirdos' around - except me, of course

Never tried out Planet Fitness. I generally don't like gyms' policy of having to sign up, take a tour or attend some sort of training, provide bank account information, etc. Around here the community centers (county and city operated) have gyms that you can just walk in, pay $3 for a day pass, and get in and get out. That's what I do. They are well maintained and clean and some also have pools for lap swimming. I don't pay too much attention to the other people there, but they don't have any signs posted like no lunkheads or no fat chicks or whatever.

What's the deal with the 5 gallon jugs of water? It's not like the Lunks are doing any cardio so no need to replace fluids.

I've only used Planet Fitness on travel (when work travel was a thing), and never had to anything but sign a waiver and pay for the day. Wasn't given any speeches about behavior or anything.

Never had any trouble from other people questioning how I work out.

When I went over, I was informed that I didn't need to do ANY in-person stuff, and I could've just joined through the app, picked a "home" location and walked right in

It was still nice to get a courtesy walk-around, since I was there already

AND the hydro massage chair

Maybe it is just varies by Planet Fitness location.

The one here says, “The monthly membership payment will be automatically debited from your account each month, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.”

Yeah, see, that is the problem I have with gyms in general...giving them access to my bank account, credit card, etc. under the guise that it is for my convenience.

He is also a member of a “weightlifting gym” and is a very accomplished Olympic and Power lifter, holding national records in his age/weight class.

He knows and supports the purpose of each gym.

He happened to wear a USA Powerlifting t-shirt into Planet Fitness and was on the treadmill when he was asked to “not wear that t-shirt here anymore because it intimidates other people.”

That is plain stupid.

It isn't just lifting. I was on a business trip and my company has an agreement with PF that allows us to workout there. At the time (many years ago) I was a very serious runner. I used treadmills as very controlled speed work.

I did my planned workout wearing a technical shirt and nylon shorts - nothing exposed. I didn't make any noise other than the breathing and foot falls on the treadmill. When I was done I literally gave it a complete cleaning before I went to the locker room. On my way out the manager told me I wasn't welcome any longer and he would refund the remainder of my membership. I told him to have his CEO call my CEO and work it out between them, took the corporate card and left.

As far as I know we still have that travel perk but I haven't been in a PF since that day. They are more than a safe gym place. They make up the rules as they go and any snow flake can call you out on anything.

So what part of the story are you leaving out? They tried to permanently ban you with no explanation for using a treadmill. that makes total sense.

I think you mean gallon jugs?

I'd love to know why that started. I don't remember it being a thing at all when I started lifted 30 years ago. There is this general concern of being well hydrated nowadays, but maybe it has to do with consuming high protein diet and/or creatine?

Now it's just part of the look of many serious lifters, along with lugging around a ridiculously large gym bag from exercise to exercise. I have no idea what they are carrying in there.

I would presume he was running too fast/intensely which could be perceived as intimidating to other gym members.

So visiting the parent's for Christmas and the only gym in town these days is a Planet Fitness. Not been in one before. I got that it's clearly oriented to the average person who wants to work out for health and could be intimidated by a gym with more hardcore lifters but...

It's ironic they have a number of signs up touting their inclusiveness, etc. then they also have a sign up over the section with dumbells that is a big hazard type light that says "Lunk Alert", anyone who wears a tank top, drinks from a gallon jug, grunts or drop weights or judges is a "Lunk".

Now I don't do any of these thinks other than maybe grunt? But still ironic to have a place that's all about welcoming anyone and not judging while having a sign up that at least in part is one big judgement.

I had run across videos on Youtube of serious lifters going into Planet Fitness and trying to get themselves kicked out. Now I get it.

So it sounds like they are over the top in terms of implementation. (I read the rest of the thread!) But the main idea they are trying to get across is fine.

I just can't help thinking of the fact that the song "I'm Too Sexy..." was written by a couple of gym owners ("Right Said Fred") who thought the preening of a bunch of the members was over the top...

Neither Intimidation nor Inspiration are strong suits of mine, so I'm good there

Probably just need to make sure I don't wear a shirt or a mask that blatantly says "Fuck" on it anywhere

Creatine supplements would be my first guess. The combo of creatine and H20 blow your muscles up like balloons.

This, plus I sweat a lot and when running fast or hard on a treadmill it tends to "leave the confines of the machine area." I did clean up very well afterwards but it didn't matter to the Karen that was walking on the one beside me.

And my original reply was 18 months ago. How did this thread get brought back to the light if day?

I read that as "swear" which may also be a problem if I'm watching Jeopardy! while on the TM and I shout something like "What is Brazil, you fucking idiot!!!"
