Rookie wheel choice. Advice please.
Quote | Reply
I have built up a bike from parts.
Frame: planet X Stealth.
Groupset: 105 11 SPD.
Wheels Vision team 30 (from my road bike)
I also got drunk and bought a Shimano c50 FRONT only. off eBay (alloy brake track)

Would it be worth while buying a deeper (or disc) for the back? Or buying matching 50mm wheel set. I have a budget of 500gbp.

Other info:
Goal: step up from half to full IM.
FTP=226W
Weight:70kg

If budget is tight, then any rear wheel with a disc cover is a fantastic choice. Less convenient than a dedicated dsc, but almost all the performance. And then, as deep as you can afford for the front.

I tried to fit a DIY cover on team 30 but the seat stay fouls it.

DIY as in you fabricated the cover and fasteners. Or did you use a kit like a Wheelbuilder cover?

I could see that not working. Wheel covers are slightly canonically shaped to lay flat on the hub and spokes to the rim edge. Plus, the fasteners are designed to be secure at speed. If a Wheelspeed cover exists for your wheel, I would start there. If not, buy the deepest wheel you can afford.

Disc wheels are plentiful on EBay and they rarely get much use because not many people train on them. This makes a disc wheel the perfect used purchase. I have had at least 5 disc wheels over the years and I never bought a new wheel.

There is also a company from Poland or some Baltic country that sells a nice disc wheel for somewhere right around your budget.

The beauty of a disc is they are all within a couple of watts of each other so as long as it fits your bike and tire choice you dont have to be particularly picky about brand.
