I wonder what these tires will look like weight-wise and with rolling resistance.

The SMART Tire Company has revealed its first space-age tire, soon to be available to the general public. Already tested by NASA for use on Mars Rover missions, these tires come equipped with the company's Shape Memory Alloy Radial Technology (SMART), made from the super-elastic material NiTinol+.

While regular elastic can stretch, smart memory metal goes a step further by rearranging its molecular structure when bent and then immediately resuming its former shape. Thus, these tires never lose air, never go flat and have strength like titanium.

Such tires present many uses here on Earth, including an alternative to pneumatic bicycle tires that promises a light, durable and smooth riding experience. In fact, these tires can enhance safety through improved traction for commuters on concrete and gravel roads alike. The tires even use a synthetic, rubber-like material called Polyurethanium for the strongest grip and tread in all weather conditions. In other words, these SMART tires can last the entire lifetime of your bike without ever needing a replacement due to leaks, tears, messy sealants or punctures.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about these new tires is that they are manufactured by NASA. Indeed, the SMART Tire Company has also collaborated with the Ford Motor Company's micromobility provider Spin to develop this shape memory alloy for electric scooters. The two companies seek to combine efforts in creating an easier and securer transportation experience for consumers.

To be realistic, the only way one could buy some tomorrow and use them if they were made available is if they made them as tubular glue-on style.

Folks with tubeless and clincher would SOL. With nothing to keep the tire on the rim.

So, given that.........either you'd have to ditch your wheels and buy tubs OR yet another new wheel and tire standard.

I have two main concerns:

1. These end up providing a measurable performance advantage and synthetic never shuts up about it.

2. These mimetic polyalloys or whatever they're called reform into the shape of a police officer and try to assassinate a young John Connor. I've seen this happen before.

Nothing good can come of this.

Cheers, Rich.

The buzz around these tires has been picked up by various cycling media outlets and supposedly they are tubeless compatible with current wheel technology. They are also supposed to ‘last the life time of the bike’ which probably gives an indication of cost. No information has been provided over how they would be mounted though and given the durability claim it way be a massive proprietary undertaking but supposed possible with current tubeless wheels.

i am about practical cycling. that is why i advocate, this tire technology that already exists and we do not need to wait on the mars rover.

i put in a lot of bike miles, as its my job. i disliked group riding, as someone always got a flat, and we have to sit there waiting for them. good training time down the toilet.

In 35+ years as an avid cyclists I've probably seen dozens of revolutionary airless tires that never go flat. Some how, we all still all have tire pumps. I'll believe it when I see it.
