Canyon Speedmax - Production Delays?
Does anyone have insight with the delays re: Canyon Speedmax?

The "available date" for purchase (for all new Speedmax models) keeps getting pushed. Last week Canyon indicated most bikes would be available 2/1 to 2/5. As of today, Canyon has removed the date (or updated to late March). Originally these bikes were supposed to be available in late December and early January.

I'm wondering if anyone knows what is going on. When will Canyon's bikes actually be available for purchase?

There are delays throughout the supply chain right now, so it could be anything. This morning, there are any number of container ships waiting to enter the port to off-load. Many have been out there for weeks waiting for a spot.

One of our shoe reps told us there were 31 container ships in front of theirs to be off loaded.

Canyon is not alone on this. We experience the same with Cervelo, Felt, Orbea and likely every other brand.
And it is the same with parts.
Di2 is almost more value then gold right now ;-)

Canyon website just updated from taking orders on 2/8 ... now 3/1. If I new it would actually order on 3/1 and not be strung along again ... well, looking at cervelos now.

This is not just the Speedmax. I had been looking to buy either a new full suspension 29er or a cross bike / gravel race bike (I couldn't decide which I wanted more) starting in September. I was interested in bikes from a wide variety of mainstream bike shop brands and consumer-direct brands. Basically nothing has been in stock that time. I've had notifications set up on five different direct-sales models and none of them have come in stock. I went to two large, reputable local shops a few weeks ago ready to buy and was essentially laughed at. One shop told me they were sitting on 3,000 backorders for various Giant models and expects to get maybe 20% of them. Neither would even take my order. I ended up getting a (very sweet) used bike from the Pro's Closet. A friend went in to one of the shops this week to ask about an S-Works Tarmac SL7 and was quoted June 2022 delivery, with even that being uncertain. I can't find specific Shimano chains, Lazer helmets, Continental tires, shoe covers, gloves and various other bits I've been looking for.

The scary part is it's the off season right now in North America. The shortage is just going to get worse. If you can find bike stuff you might need this year, I would buy it now before the season hits.

I know for sure that all new Canyon Aeroads are not selling right now because of the seat post failure, there're plenty of information about it on the internet.
They're currently contacting all clients to discuss the replacement options.

I was looking at the Canyon site yesterday, at the new Speedmax. I'm in the UK and the initial Brexit fest problems are resolved.
The lower end Speedmax are available right away (all sizes) eg the 105 and mechanical Ultegra models (which is the part of the market I'm in).
But the higher models with di2 or etap have longer waits - April or longer (some August from a few random looks). I suppose that could be a pointer at the lack of groupset availability?

it's not just Canyon. Lots of bike brands are pushing their February/Mach releases back until May through August.

Back in 2018 I was considering a Speedmax CF 8 Ltd. My "A" race for that year was in late June. And this was in January '18 or so. Was very close to pulling the trigger on it, but then the availability date shifted. From March to May. Which made me hesitate. Then about a week later it shifted again to (IIRC) the 1st week of June. I didn't order at all in the end. I would have wanted to get a pro fit, plus obviously I need to spend SOME time on it before racing it. It was just unwise.

Towards the end of that year I looked at their site again and they had loads in stock but of course the '18 season was pretty much over. And they weren't offering big enough discounts to persuade me. (think it was in the region of 5-7%. ) A cursory look at their site in December 20 suggests they STILL have similar problems. Loads of that years bikes in stock, but long after people want them in Spring! Don't get me wrong, I'm not hung up on having the newest and greatest bike. My current road bike was bought in a Autumn/Fall sale and was around 28% off. But Canyons inability to think ahead and build some reasonable stock levels before releasing the bike to market strike me as typical "German efficiency" (i.e a myth!) And if they are like that for new bikes, it made me concerned for any warranty issues or spares availability.

Shame really, as I love the look of their bikes and they always get great reviews. The new Speedmax CFR is just bike porn!

Curious why there has been no further discussion on the non-availability of the Speedmax CFR TT bike since Feb 2021. To the US customer these have been unavailable all year. Canyon offers no explanation

A friend of mine ordered one, sold his old bike and now he doesn’t have one to ride. He hasn’t been able to race any. Missed out on Texas 70.3 and so on. This is nuts.

I ordered a Speedmax CF 8 Di2 in early April 2018. The in-stock dates kept shifting; but, limited stock was popping up through the early spring.

if you’re set on a Canyon, It pays to obsessively check Canyon’s site. I ordered Grails for my wife and I this spring despite the site in-stock dates being August for our sizes. The email alerts did not pop up, but checking daily I was able to get them in late April.

Not sure if the Speedmax is in another category bc it’s new-new.

I’ve nearly given up. Have a lead on an Argon e119 that I might go with. They only have the CF SLX DI2 listed no ETAP. The Kona 2021 edition bike won’t be available until after Kona…

I get production issues, dealing with them at work as well, but they just don’t have any stock. I’m having a hard time with the demand argument at this point. Is there really THAT many people buying new 8-10k bikes? Have the delivered any?

Get a web page monitor app like Distill - it alerted me when a Speedmax CF 8 DISC came in stock unexpectedly in my size this past June. I jumped on it and got it within a week. However, I was never alerted by the "official" canyon email system that the bike was in stock. I then used the same method to score a GRAIL.

I've seen a couple at races this season in the UK. I would've thought they have a warehouse
full of framesets, just no parts to hang on them. This is pure speculation but I reckon when the parts do arrive they probably have to decide which model of bike to put them on, and likely favour the road models for a greater profit margin. The speedmax frame must bear the highest cost in their inventory based on lower potential units sold from the moulds and the extra labour time to make them.

Maybe the stock issue is regional? I ordered the CF 8 last week and got it 6 days later. Shipped from Germany to Korea. It was available in every size.

Edit: Nvm. Just checked and SLX, CFR, and TT models are all out of stock here, too

Does he not have a road bike or the ability to rent/borrow a bike for a race? When I sold my bike, I figured I'd do one of these things if I don't have a replacement before my next race.

Your comment about choosing which frames to buildout based upon profitability sounds like a very good theory to me...I know from trying to buy other brand road bikes that hardware shortages are affecting deliveries. Thank you

He said he was trying to rent or borrow but it looked like that didn’t happen. He didn’t race at all. I didn’t get a chance to talk to him for a while but I totally understand. I wouldn’t be happy to ride someone else’s bike for 70.3. He’s a competitive age grouper BTW and ordered the Canyon long time ago but his timing was just so bad.

I'm 6'3" / 191cm and ride XL/61cm bikes. When my bike didn't arrive at 140.6 Austria, I raced on a 54cm road bike that a vendor kindly lent me. Cost me about 30 minutes but it's better than not racing.

I understand being frustrated about delivery times these days, but it shouldn't be enough to ruin the joy of racing :)
