Flagstaff or Scottsdale for January Road Cycling vacation?
Quote | Reply
My wife and I would like to spend 1-2 weeks in January road bike training. ~50-75 m /day.
Would Flagstaff be better than Scottsdale?
Looking for decent roads, mixture of rolling and climbing terrain, dry weather and temps (ideally) above 50s. Don’t really care about luxury resorts.
Have never spent time in either of these towns.
Some decent hiking / running trails would be a plus.
Is this plan sensible?

used to live in Flagstaff.. and sitting around 7000 ft.. the weather may not be what your looking for..snow is common during the winter months... But if in Scottsdale area and the weather is good easy 2 hour drive north...

I’m in Scottsdale and it was 68 and sunny yesterday. Flagstaff was in the mid 40s and has multiple days of the next 10 in the 30s.

If you want sun and warm weather it has to be Scottsdale.

Tuscon is your better choice. Warm, good weather and much better riding for that distance/day than Scottsdale....

Flag = better hiking trails
Scottsdale = better weather for riding your bike

Flag = it could snow
Scottsdale = 99% chance of sunny days, temps in the mid 60s to low 70s and a nice start to your cycling tan lines.

Flag = less traffic
Scottsdale = more traffic

Don't count out Prescott or Tucson if you are looking at AZ.

Tucson has the best road cycling opportunities - much better than Scottsdale. Flagstaff is great ... in the summer. As mentioned, it can be cold and snowy there in January. Tucson is also very affordable, better than Scottsdale. I have lived in both places. Enjoy!

We have great hiking/running mtn bike trails in Phoenix. Better than any major city in the world. Check out aravaiparunning.com for some possibilities- they do trail races all over the Phoenix area. Plus there is Scottsdale Sonoran Preserve for great running trails, Phoenix mtn preserve, South Mtn park - too many to name.

Currently live in Scottsdale near Fartleker and used to live in Tucson near desert dude. Also spent a month in Flag this summer.

Tucson is your best overall bet, but Scottsdale will be nicer weather. Flag should not even be considered that time of year.

I'm in agreement with this.

Flagstaff -it's winter, and they get winter weather there, mostly due to the elevation.

Scotsdale is OK - but metro Phoenix is home 7 million+ people these days. It's BUSY. here is some good riding in the area - but you need to know the right roads to ride on and be on

Tucson - by far, is the best option if cycling is your thing. So many great options in the area. Also Tucson is the size about a million people, that it offers all of the big city amenities, but you can ride right out of the city into the country in relatively short order - usually in a Bike Lane. They also have a 150km of completely off-the-road paved multi-use trails, where you can ride over 100km, and never be on a road! Add in legendary climbs like Mt Lemmon and Kitt Peak - it's awesome. We have been many times to ride.

Whoa there buddy. It's not that big here! Phoenix Metropolitan Area is only 4.5 Million people!

However, if you are wanting road cycling. I wouldn't do Scottsdale unless you wanted to go North up Pima and ride out in Cave Creek. Or out on Shea and to do laps on the Beeline. Not really a lot of options with limited traffic.

If you chose Flagstaff, be prepared that you're doing winter riding. The place just got a massive storm so there's snow everywhere. Prescott gets a bit less weather.

Tucson has the loop which is over 120 miles of paved mixed use, but cycling path.

Short reply: Flagstaff has a ski slope. That's all you need to know about that.

If you were doing Mt bikes I would say Scottsdale/Phoenix in a heartbeat, no opinion on roads though.
