I ate Thanksgiving dinner on the bike
I found out that instant mashed potatoes and instant gravy have huge amounts of sodium (which I need as I'm a heavy sweater with a large amount of sodium per liter of sweat, and I'm in a tropical climate).

These seemed to be the ideal endurance fuel for me, except they're kind of gross.

So when Thanksgiving rolled around, I finally had an excuse to eat them on the bike. I included another Thanksgiving food, too!

Here's a video I did of it:

Real food on a bike ride, now who would have ever thought of doing that? You needed some wine in your bottles to finish off the meal.

Seriously though ,I have seen full meals eaten with a spork out of tupperware containers fitted between aerobars during many a multi-Iron Ultra-tri..One of my favourite photos is a mate of mine eating pizza out of the box while on the run course of the Deca in Mexico.

Yeah, potatoes of any kind are a go-to fuel for ultra distance.

Baked, mashed, boiled, hash browns, chips, fries, crisps, gnocchi........ it's all good. Even vodka could be a possibility.

Please tell me I'm not the only one to have wine in my special needs bag at IM?

Lots of ultra runners use mashed potatoes for fuel. I know courtney dauwalter uses them quite a lot

Its just a starch, like table sugar but digests more slowly

Dessert wine, like Port, is great

I had considered putting some Calvados aside in special needs in Wales 2019, in case I'd be finishing at the same time as my brother. But technically it's probably against the rules and there was anyway plenty of time for such fun after finishing. Still, it's bound to happen.

.
I have put vodka in my water bottles and Camelbak to stop the liquid freezing during winter rides in Canada.I am not sure if that contributed to my falling down a lot in the snow and ice.

Just tells you that you're not adapted enough to it yet. Keep at it :)

In general I think alcohol isn't the best idea, but in small amounts there could be some benefits. You just need to be aware it can escalate quickly, so close to a finish might be perfectly fine, while at the start of a hot bike or run probably is not the best plan. Drunk swimming is probably also not great.

well, fun and all, but for the amount of cals you got from instant mashed to be so watery, you could have simply
drank salt water. but that wouldn't have been thanksgiving dinner.
a small raw potato in the back pocket ftw! ;-)

True. The guy who introduced this to me actually has started riding with potatoes in his pockets now...not sure if they are raw though!
