Best roof rack w/through axle?
I am about to get a new gravel bike that has a 12mm through axle for the wheels. My tri and road bikes are both rim brake, and I have two Thule racks that go on the roof that work fine for those bikes.

In the spring I got a Rockymounts Monorail hitch mount that can carry three bikes. The rear hitch mount rack will obviously work for the new gravel bike, but I'm wondering what roof mount is best? There are a few times a year where my family goes on a week+ trip and we generally bring as many bikes as we can fit - currently there are mountain bikes for myself, my wife & son, plus road/tri bikes. Having another roof option would allow us to bring six bikes.

From looking at options for the roof, the Rockmounts Switchhitter and the Kuat Trio are good choices. I'm also considering the upright options that keep the front wheel on.

Thanks in advance!!

if you already have the trays you can get a QR to TA fork mount adapter

if not I would just see what is offered by whoever you currently use so you can use the same locking core

if you're already running thule and have their bars then this is the obvious answer https://www.thule.com/...le-thruride-_-565000

the tricky thing with through axles is there are multiple diameters - 12mm for road/gravel, 15mm for XC, 20mm for DH. the thule has an infinitely adjustable clamp to handle any diameter and also comes with a QR adapter so it really can handle anything.

i've been using one for a year or so now and its worked well for me. like you i was previously using thule QR racks so this slotted onto the same rail mounts and i've even got it setup with the same keys

The Trio is a great option!! That's what I went with-it's super easy to use and the sliding rear wheel strap/tray is painfully easy to use. The built in lock is nice since you mention traveling/vacation-built in way to lock the bike to the rack at least when stopping somewhere. It does obviously mean having to put the front wheel somewhere in the car. It's a very solid unit-definitely no worries about the construction of this rack!
