Dafuq is this?! Wooden track bike wheel
On Ebay hunting used pursuit framesets....and found this....

Wooden track wheel. Tubular. Typical trispoke style valve cutout.

Seriously WTF. Is this a thing? Special race class?

This is what happens when a track cyclist buys a CNC wood mill and has nothing else to do...

Looks interesting. Looking closely at the photos, l wonder if the wheel blank started out as a foam core sandwiched by two layers of thin plywood, one on each side. Hard to imagine that this wheel is solid wood.

I have seen some early primitve 5 spoke carbon wheels built similarly (from Russia, in the early 90s) where the wheel blank was just like a disc wheel, foam core sandwiched by carbon fiber sheets on each side. Then the 'spokes' (or, more precisely, the spoke holes) were machined out (manually, not cnc).

It's a real thing: https://cyclingtips.com/...he-gipiemme-factory/

"One item that has gained a huge amount of press coverage is the unique wooden wheel set the company made for the world’s biggest international bike show, Eurobike in Germany. Originally a show piece for their stand the item gained so much interest that Gipiemme started producing it in a limited run.

Given the company doesn’t have a wood-working department, the product was built in conjunction with a local company that had the skills and tools for the job. The four-ply disc and crazy four-spoked wheels have been snapped up by the hipster kid brigade. Braking isn’t advised on the wheels; because of this they are usually used as back wheels where it’s easy to get away without a brake on a fixed bike."

Perfect for your bamboo track bike.

That's because I doubt that it would ever actually be used on a track. Like most hipster bikes around town.

also spaced at 130... so yeah, was certainly never really intended for a track bike.

in all fairness... I wouldn't really be excited to be doing a match sprint and have somebody cut off the rail on one of these :D

My dad’s track wheel from the 1950’s. I don’t know what type of wood - we guessed bamboo.

Cool! I love it.

I wish I had a big house for an entertainment room. Hanging a vintage track bike up would be one decoration.
