Can you recycle a carbon frame?
I've got a Cannondale SuperSix Evo carbon frame that is damaged enough that it will never ride again. (Even if it were repairable, I would never trust the repair, given where the damage is.).

So what do I do with it? Can you recycle a carbon bike frame?

In theory, it is possible to recycle carbon fiber. I think that may be pretty energy intensive, as I think you need to separate the resin from the actual fibers. Obviously, if you put your damaged frame in the curbside recycling, the trash collectors are probably going to laugh at you, or cry, and throw it into the trash, and perhaps write you a ticket. There may be some specialized companies that recycle carbon fiber, though. I came across a story about Alchemy Bicycles and their partnership with a carbon recycler.

An interesting tidbit from the article: we obviously want to think about recycling bike frames and parts after they’ve been irreparably damaged. However, another issue is recycling manufacturing scraps from the factory floor. Right now, this isn’t done at all.

Repair it and dedicate it to the trainer.

The damage (Read: "the part that's ripped in half") is the dropout. I don't have the piece that ripped off.

Thanks. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by that.

Next time I buy a bike (if there is a next time), I think I'll feel better about myself if I buy something metal.

Well, there's nothing lighter than carbon composites, so when you are racing for placings....

For me, when I stopped racing, I went back to metal for that reason, but mainly for durability.

Talk to a carbon repair place anyway. They may be able to still repair the dropout by replacing it

3d print a new one, and glue it in!. good for a trainer dedicated bike

I appreciate the suggestions about repurposing this for the trainer, but that's not going to happen. I already have a dedicated trainer bike. I don't need another one.

The dropout that's ripped in half is the right rear one the one that had a derailleur hanger on it. The hanger was literally a part of the frame, not removable (this was the "Nano" model so I'm guessing that was why). Regardless it is now gone too.

I don't have access to a 3D printer or know how to use one. So I could try to get that and take all the time that I don't have to learn or pay a custom builder to do that. But it would be all for a trainer bike I don't need.

I mostly was hoping I could recycle this thing.

while I am following your reasoning not wanting to deal with it... what you've described is an afternoon job for most places that do repairs.

If you want rid of it... just sell it as a damaged frame. It's definitely still got some value

Actually I just googled "carbon bicycle frame repair boston" and the very first hit (for a place in Minneapolis, oddly) had this. (Note the dropout replacement at the bottom)

Quote:

Cost
Every repair is unique and will need to be quoted. The size, shape, location, and severity of the damage affects the cost of repair. To give you a rough idea of costs…
  • $300 small cracks and dings
  • $350 the most common damage
  • $400+ soft, squishy, holes, full breaks, joints damage
  • $50+ add/replace H20 bottle bosses, cable stops, etc...
  • $1200+ Carbon Fiber drop out replacement

Is that the typical cost for a job like this? If so, I don't see eBay working out too well.

why are you looking at repair costs?

Look at ended listings on ebay (or facebook marketplace/online swap meet, or here) to get a feeler.

What someone charges for a repair is up to them and what the consumer will pay.

Because I wanted to see how much it cost. I'm trying to see what's realistic, not making a statement on capitalism

Sell the broken frame on eBay for money

Don't give it away.

Careful with selling 'as is'.
Friend of mine had a nasty dispute when selling a cracked frame on Ebay.
Buyer claimed damage wasn't properly disclosed.

Huge hassle for him to take it back (plus lost money for shipping at his cost) just to preserve his status.
Get it in writing that the buyer knows about the condition.

If you just want to get rid of it without binning it, maybe theres a tech college near that might want it to cut up?
