Shockingly familiar on how Depression and Despair could get him to a catatonic state where he would just lay there and expire.
It does require quite some training / meditation / conditioning to be able to block out all your bodies needs, but a long solo trek can get you to be able to do that.
And if you are at the end of a literal 'trail to nowhere' and nobody is there to 'catch' you, you can get into deep trouble.
