Be your own hero

Wise words posted by Lazarus Lake after the Backyard Ultra Monster last weekend

be your own hero

it is easy to be intimidated by the distances covered by the elite backyard runners.
to think that this is a race beyond your reach.
nothing could be further from the truth...

the heart of the backyard ultras is not the race that goes on for days.
it is the races that end in 20-30 hours.
and the soul of the sport is not the 60 hour runners.
it is every person who steps into the starting corral
in a search for their own limits.

it does not matter how far you go
the furthest you have ever gone
is the furthest you have ever gone.

be inspired by these amazing athletes.
but don't be inspired to just admire their accomplishments.
be inspired to go out and seek your own limits.
be inspired to go out and go further than you have ever gone.
be your own hero.

// if 10 years ago in my 40ties someone would have said to me: in 10 years you will ride twice as much .. then I would have said: you are crazy, that's impossible with already 15k km in a calendar year .. and this year I just did it ..

I very much enjoyed Laz's musings during the GVRAT. That's a lot of positivity locked up inside one human being.

.. today it's the 298th day of the calendar year in my time zone .. four years before I was in rehab because of a femur fracture .. i've been riding road bike since cleats were nailed on leather soles and locksmiths made my extra gears in the 1980s .. how 30.000km in one year feel ?? like 30.001km !! nobody warns you what it means for the body to have such a high metabolism .. my senses have never been so good and attentive .. it took 1000+ hours besides my full time job .. 1/3 gather round to the best time of the day with rides that finished before 9 a.m. .. all in all it's a very nice average .. after halfway through it didn't make me any faster .. ;-)
