Notably, in the past, Republican lawmakers in 6 states have introduced legislation that would shield people who plow through crowds of protestors (

With regards to the original post... My thinking on this has evolved a bit... There are certain things that police have proven themselves to be capable of doing... Are the police good at solving crimes? I'd say that it's extraordinarily rare for them to solve actual crimes... They certainly gather lots of evidence, and perform lots of "security theater" for people who have had crimes committed against them, but... if you have something stolen from you, or you're assaulted by someone you don't know, or if your house is foreclosed on illegally... There's a very low chance that a police officer is ever going to help you with those problems. My experience has been that their solution for most problems is to follow some procedure about moving people where they want them to go, or following other procedures about the type of violence they can enact against people who refuse to move where they want them to go. I think we can all acknowledge that cars don't belong in the middle of protests, so this was one of the few areas where they could've done one of the shrinking number of things that they still seem to do reasonably well... I think the people who want to defund the police are aiming to narrow down the scope of a police officer's work to things they've proven themselves capable of doing well... that seems pretty reasonable to me, but... That gets tricky when they selectively decide when they're going to do those too.
