First build recommendations!
Hi there!

I've started a budget TT/Tri build to work on over the next year as a kind of pet project while all the events I wanted to do are cancelled.
I decided that on a students budget I would try and build a second hand bike from frame upwards from deals/ parts I could scour from the internet. However, I'm a bit new to all this so would love some recommendations on parts/ hacks that you've found when building a bike.

I've started with an second hand aluminium Trek Equinox 5, complete with a new rear hanger and new ish bottom bracket.

I have a list of parts that I need and would love some recommendations on what would work on a budget.
  • Full groupset
  • Carbon fork with 1 1/8th
  • crank and pedals
  • Any kind of basebar/tt bar intergrated system (aiming for a clean front end) something like 3t
  • brakes
  • wheels can wait for closer to race time.

A full group includes crankset, bottom bracket, cassette, brakes, shift/brake levers, and chain.

Did the frame come with a headset?

Hoping to spend around 200-300 per month on the project with a max of 1,500 on the whole build I'd say

Do you happen to have the specs on the bottom bracket?

For a group set I would look at Microshift

My thoughts:
1) do you know your fit corrdinates? Start there. (body position >>> aero components/frame)
2) Once you've found a cockpit, use some trigonometry to help select a suitable stem. Don't be afraid if you have to go for something with a wacky angle.
3) a proper tri saddle is a must.
4) If you're not somewhere hilly maybe go for 1x as a way to get a cheap short crankset (e.g. a Origin8, and use a square taper BB)
5) Maybe stick to 10 speed as there are bargains compared to 11 speed for derailleurs and wheels, and it won't make you slower.
6) midrange brakes with good pads work very well
7) disc wheel cover for race days
8) low end Shimano pedals e.g. R550
