Marathon/Run Coaching - fair price?
Curious about the going market price for run coaching. Any clues, folks?

I want to do a marathon at the end of November and have developed a good base of running fitness since March, training on my own. But I'd like to hire a coach for the next 3 months - to get proper guidance, avoid injury, etc. I'd love the coach to evaluate me, write me a training plan, monitor my progress, provide me with regular feedback, etc. Aside frim these things, which I envision doing remotely (e-mail, Strava), I'd also love maybe 1 weekly session in person (consultation, actual run, whatever).

What kind of coaching fee is fair? I have received several quotes from local coaches (coastal Maine), and they vary considerably. Trying to navigate the jungle...

Any hints greatly appreciated! Thanks.

$75-150/mo is all I'd be willing to pay a single sport coach.

So I am more curious bout whether you really think 3 months is long enough to work under any coach for in order to see results. I feel like a good coach would want to ensure they also guide you through the base building phase as taking you on right now is a bit of risk as they have no idea what you did and what you can handle. I would be afraid of a coach that thinks that isn't an issue to be concerned about. In my view, for a single sport, 6 months is a minimum to work with a coach towards a long endurance goal like a marathon. I wouldn't engage a coach with less than 9 months for a triathlon of any distance.

Dont know about that. If you’re using trainingpeaks or similar where the coach Can see the work already done, i wouldn’t worry too much about it. Wether or not a coach would Think it would be worth it or it’s enough time to make a real difference is another thing.

As an athlete you’re paying for the expertise of the coach in the sport you want to compete in. So you’d only pay tops $150 for a triathlon coach? Technically, triathlon is a single sport.

Somehow I'm not surprised you'd have a comment like that.

I'm trolling you a bit, but it's a legitimate question. Make the argument why you think a triathlon coach should be paid 2x to 4x the price of a "single sport" coach as your saying - all things being equal in terms of experience, results and time spent with the athlete. In my experience, the majority of triathlon coaches are worth at most about $150 a month for what they do.

Coaching is coaching. While a lot of people think the plan delivered over training peaks is "coaching" it's actually very little of what a good coach does.

You're paying for expertise and time. Coaching has a much wider range of expertise than most professions. And the time put in also varies greatly.

What you're asking for can go from zero dollars (no experience, you'll probably get what you pay for) to $500 a month (Very experienced and they are showing up to watch you in person, and presumably alter your plan as needed and answer every little question you have)

If the are over $250 a month, look at their resume. You could be getting a deal. At the same time, lots of people charge $250+ and have no resume and no idea what they are doing.
Interview them like you would any perspective employee.

All that said, if you're only going to work with a "real" coach for 3 months, you won't get all that much out of it for no other reason than you're not going to put all that much of your own time into the process.

pay a coach when you peaked from all the online available training plans or watching other peoples strava. this coach should be in person to see when your run form breaks down or other signs of exhaustion, where he or she can change plan on the fly

Nobody is peaking off watching strava or stock training programs.
But if that's what someone wants to do, let them do it.

you peak when you are not improving in times and stagnate. Then its time for change up.
