Sounds like you may have air in the system and you need to bleed it out. You could try to adjust the lever pull by adjusting the set screw at the front of the lever thru the small hole with a 2mm allen key, more likely it's air in the system though.

1) First thing you look for is the adjustment screw in the front of the lever. If you turn it inwardly you improve in that you can brake again without hitting the handle bar with the lever.

BUT TAKE CARE

If you screw the adjustment screw too far in, it falls out of the screwthread and you can not get it in anymore. That is a construction error. The best is that you still have the screw sticking out of the screwthread.

2) If you can not screw the screw anyfurther without it sticking out, firstly unscrew the adjustment screw such that it sticks out a bit. Than work on the calipers in that you mount new brake pads or mount washers between the brake pad and the calipers. After that you can fine tune again with the adjustment screw.

3) On the rear you can adjust the rear wheel axle more to the front such that you have to move the brakepads more to the front to keep them centered on the rims. In that way the brakepads come a bit more inward.

ONLY if that all does not work you consider bleeding.

I had exactly this issue recently. I bled them myself which was very easy (I hadn't bled brakes before) & they now are working perfect again.
It was easier than I thought
