Labral Tear and FAI- PT Rec in Boston
I've been dealing with hip pain for a couple years, originally diagnosed as a chronic hip adductor strain, but second opinion and additional imaging suggests labral tear and FAI. Plan is to try another focused course of PT before discussing surgery.

Anyone have recommendations for a PT with experience treating these issues? Located in Waltham, so surrounding suburbs is ideal, but willing to drive if needed. Would really like to avoid surgery, especially with a baby on the way in November.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have the same issue. Not sure who your ortho is but I'd recommend trying to get an appointment with Dr. Scott Martin at Mass General. He is a hip specialist and has been running some studies on surgery vs. conservative treatment for labral tear/FAI. I believe he has an office at MGH Waltham.

As far as PT, David Nolan at the MGH Sports Medicine clinic in Boston is the best I've ever dealt with. Tough to get an appointment but Dr. Martin might be able to refer you to him.

What type of doctor have you worked with to date? If I had this situation I would try to see Adam Tenforde at Spaulding (https://spauldingrehab.org/...an/987/adam-tenforde), who will probably want to try Shockwave therapy and PT, but maybe not. Either way, he is a running focused doctor who is extremely knowledgeable and very patient focused. On the PT side, I would *try* to see Greg Robidoux at Spaulding Wellesley, but that will probably prove impossible because those guys are always very overbooked and he doesn't work in that spot much anyway (will help if you see Adam first).

Saw Stephen Wright at Boston Sports and Shoulder for the initial assessment and diagnostic injection, following up with Dr. Wuerz in six weeks.

I actually had a few appointments with Greg earlier in the spring and we did some work with my fit. He's great, but it was challenging to get appointments, and then everything shut down. At that point, I had a previous diagnosis of chronic hip adductor strain.

Thanks for the recs, might try to get another opinion from Dr. Martin before I consider anything surgical.

Have you been successful without surgery?

For the most part, yes. I've had two cortisone injections over the past maybe 3-4 years which have kept it at bay. I do get some pain occasionally these days when running but admittedly I haven't kept up with any hip-specific PT or exercises as I've been focused on dealing with another injury. I'm probably due for another shot soon.

That's helpful, thanks. Just had a cortisone shot Monday... feels worse right now but I know I need to be patient and let it kick in. Cycling and flip turns are usually the most painful for me, running and nordic skiing usually are pretty good.

I would recommend Sue McNatt https://suempt.wixsite.com/mysite in Wellesley. She is a competitive runner and has been doing PT for over 20 years. Helped me recover from a serious ankle injury.

I ski with Sue and worked with her on some running improvements earlier this spring- she is fantastic! Insurance is a question mark there, but I'll check. Thanks!
