I was looking in the $150 range so maybe not all that inexpensive.

I found a Giro Vanquish for $185 so its a little more than I really wanted to spend. I may go with that.

Dude, retail on an Aro5 is like $200. What is budget about that?

I'd cruise your LBS pages for last year's stock. Often they buy in a few "team" logo aero helmets that sell at like 60% off when the new year hits. If you're OK with team logos. If not, plastidip it.

I've gotten previous year Evades before in team logos for like $60 before.

Yeah, i guess i was looking more for a good deal than real inexpensive/on a budget.

Best product for the lowest price is always the goal...paying $150 for a $275 helmet feels like a win, but Jim is right in that its not actually a budget buy.

I had found some nice helmets on deep discounts (Kask Utopia, Aro5, Vitesse and some others which is why i mentioned them) but only the Vitesse in my size. But I hadn't seen much in writing about Aro5 or Vitesse.

My current helmet is a few years past the 10 year mark and I ride on local (lightly travelled but still all it takes is one car or fall) so I needed to move on this.

Then comes the question of buying something for training and racing or one for each, so I guess I'd rather spend a little less one one helmet that I'll use all the time instead of two, one of which would be barely used since i dont do all that many races.

I know this helmet doesn't get a lot of attention but I've been using Bolle The One for the past few years and I've been really happy with it. Basically it's a traditional road helmet that comes with two snap-in shells to convert it to an aero road helmet. It also comes with a removable visor and an insulated winter liner. It reatils for $169 from Bolle but you can almost always find it on sale for well under $150. I use it for training, racing, road, gravel and mountain biking, year-round in temps ranging from 20's to 90's F. I'm sure it's not the fastest aero helmet but it does everything reasonably well and in terms of value you pretty much get 3 helmets for the price of one.

I'm in a similar situation. My old helmet is approaching 10 years old and I don't want to break the bank on a new one because I've but quite a bit of cash into my bike recently.

I've considering a few different options

Specialized Evade-highly rated aero road helmet; retails around $275

Lazer Bullet 2.0(it has 2 different front vents-1 for more cooling and 1 for aero)-retails around $260

*The following combination I found on Amazon and is very temping
-SLS3 TT helmet for racing-$80
- Kask Rapido(1 of their basic road helmet for training-$80
-that's $160 total for 2 helmets

Also, with the recent increase in cycling due to gyms being shut down(COVID-19), its very hard to find really good deals on cycling gear(including helmets) because the demand is so high

If you're on a REAL budget, just take an old latex swimming cap from your last race, stretch it over your current helmet. Instant aero gainzzzz.
* not great in hot weather

When I first read the thread title, this is what I thought of. That or just taping off the vents with packing tape.

I’ve been happy with the SLS3 aero Helmet. Msrp is $139, but $79 on Amazon.

Deals require time and looking around and you pretty much need to pull the plug immediately! I found a Bullet 2.0 on a FB Marketplace - $150 brand new....This was a fit shop selling some extras he had brand new.

By the way, I really like this helmet - the vent works as it should. Good fit for my head and all the Lazer helmets schore real well on the VT crash test scores (although the Bullet 2.0 was not actually listed on the test.

The Vanquish is a very nice helmet. I've used it for the past couple years on road and have been very happy with it. Works well in all weather temps for me.

Hey can I ask you what your experience has been ordering from merlincycles to the US? They seem to have much better deals on components than wiggle.

I order stuff from Merlin every week. They have been using DHL recently for shipping most orders and I get my stuff in two days.

If they use Royal Mail, it takes about ten days.

Nice helmet, good reviews, and good price.

I wonder if it would race legal in the US?

The sticker inside the helmets says, "Complies with U.S. CPSC safety standard for bicycle helmets for persons age 5 and older".

Check out the Carnac Aero Road helmet.
Even shipped to the states its a pretty good deal.
I got one during one of their many many sales for less than $45 shipped.
Comfortable, not very heavy, not a bad deal.

I’ve ordered from them about 10 times or so. Never an issue.

I really like my Vitesse, it fits well and has mips at a good price point. I bought it for draft legal racing- i don’t think there’s aero data on it but I assumed it would be aero since other Garneau products test well(ie P-09).

Did you get it from Merlin? Or a US based store?

I don't have any experience with the Oakley or Garneau but I have been impressed with the Giro Vanquish and ABUS Gamechanger. Both have decent ventilation and feel rather fast.
