Any opinions: Xterra TRX4500 treadmill -
I'm considering buying my first treadmill. I'm not intending to spend big money but don't want to buy something half assed either.
I don't know much about treadmills, cycling being my main interest.

Any opinions on whether the XTerra TRX4500 is a good choice?

In a bit of a hurry to make a decision and place an order so can't do as much research ad I normally would. Your input would be great, thanks!

Decent site for treadmill reviews. I found a new Sole F63 on craigslist for a smoking deal and very happy with it.

Xterra is made by Spirit, I have always found that they were quality good for their price point. Parts and service not too expensive when repairs are needed. Far better that Icon brands (Proform, Norditrack, Reebok, Freemotion, etc.). But as other have said and reiterated in multiple forums, in the entry level market, you cannot go wrong with a Sole unit.

Thanks for your help guys.

I haven't ordered one yet, my partner is having second thoughts about the space it will take up.
Sole and NordicTrack were the other main brands I was looking at. I wasn't sure the Sole F63 was substantial enough. The F80 or F85 looked good but perhaps a bit too expensive. Unfortunately, in the couple of days since I posted, availability seems to have dried up on most options, including the Xterra and most Sole models. Many companies here have shut since last week, with only some online companies remaining and those have had a rush on indoor training equipment. So I'm not sure if we can get anything we're interested in now. :( I thought this might happen, but we hesitated too long.

In the year since I started this thread, we never did buy a treadmill. Availability dried up while we were looking, then my partner got pregnant. I've been happily sticking to the bike for the last year, but now post baby, she's enthusiastic to get a treadmill again. It's looking like the Sole F80 or the Nordictrack 1750. I think the Nordictrack is the frontrunner. It's a little more expensive, but slightly shorter, bigger motor and less gimmicky looking; plus reviews seem to suggest it's a bit more stable and robust.

So, same question different models...Norictrack 1750 vs Sole F80? Others I'm missing?

XTerra brand is good for its price. There are some more expensive brands, but I don't think they worth it.

Honestly all treadmills at that $1300-$1800 price point function near identically and have similar if not identical grade parts.

None of them will/should 'die' early, they're all pretty solid.

That said, a regularly used TM in this price range lasts 8-10 years before somethings need a fix. Often times it's the deck (wooden board under the moving belt), sometimes other things, and that's when having the right brand helps, as a known company like Sole has tons of experience helping their users fix/replace stuff that breaks.

That said, my Sole F80 is now 9 years old, and lives in a very harsh environment garage (AM condensation is a real killer) and have replaced nearly the entire unit outside of the (rusty) frame - deck, motor, console, etc. So it's not bulletproof, and yes, it's annoying to have to do this stuff - not hard, but not so easy that you can do it in a few minutes. Sole provided parts very quickly and had phone help that was also useful, but I was still own my own for most of it. (Thanks youtube).

It's really what happens AFTER things go wrong that you're paying for, not just performance up front. You don't get a ton more of a quality run experience on a $5k Landice, nor does the frame look 'that' much nicer, nor is the console signficantly better - but the internals will definitely last longer AND if things break, their warrantee will be a lot better and longer than the $1500 TM.

In summary, when comparing TMs in your price range, you can almost ignore the features stated - they're all good, all will go faster than you will ever run, and all have motors that should outlast you (most of them are lifetime motor warrantees, despite Lionel killing them regularly.) But you absolutely should go over the warrantee and replacement terms with a fine-toothed comb, as that's where you'll feel it the most.

Thanks, good points that I shall bear in mind!

I wish I was looking at US$1500-US$1800 price range. Those treadmills in Europe are quote a it more expensive. Going rate here for the F80 is about €2000 and €2200 for the Nordictrack 1750.
