It would be great to see an uptick in running events. For the past few years running in events has dipped quite a bit. I was speaking to a former executive of one the the largest running event organizations. He said in general less than 50% of their entrants at the time were returning entrants. They had to go out and find and then entice new entrants. The hardest group to find and entice were 25-35 year old men. Running USA is the Keeper of the Numbers for running race/event participation in the U.S. and according to them the total number of participants has been drifting ever so slightly down over the past 5 - 6 years. It's been down about 1% to 2% each year in the last number of years. So not that bad, but there is no growth OVERALL. What has been growing is the number of women (and more men leaving running), and women now generally outnumber men at almost all running races below the marathon distance!
