I have to admit a fair amount of ignorance here. Exactly how bad is this? And is it suggestive of something further?

Current anti-doping regulations prohibit intravenous infusions or injections in athletes if the total volume of the infusion exceeds 100 milliliters within twelve hours. Sif Bendix Madsen admitted to having received an infusion of 500 milliliters of saline (Ringer's acetate). The saline solution may be taken, but the permitted amount has been exceeded.

Too old to go pro but doing it anyway

I see IVs shamelessly advertised at major events. They even had a booth at the Expo for the Gasparilla Distance Classic a couple of weeks ago. I took a picture but can't shrink it below 600KB. The had a large van with an IV schematic painted right on it. You could have gotten one before or after the race.

Of all the things, it's not terrible. But the rules are the rules and a coach/athlete as experienced as Michael should have known better. I'd like to know the circumstance, because that's a lot of saline to take – was it post race and she was severely dehydrated?

I believe Anti Doping Denmark and Tri Denmark wanted to make an example of this, and came down hard. They also instituted a new program called "Out in the Open" which requries all athletes to read and sign a document outlining a new practice: any changes to a training/nutrition/etc program or anything new being introduced to an athlete must be seconded by an accredited coach or specialist or someone within Triathlon Denmark; if an athlete is under 18, then parents must be informed and agree. Basically, no f-ing around, full transparency on everything.

I wonder if this was influended by the case of the former Danish national swimming coaches and some of the things they were doing.

Pretty benign. It's just saline, but there is a ban on any IV beyond a certain volume. As others have said, he should have known better; but 4yrs seems a bit harsh (that's steriods/EPO/Blood doping territory).

I could really only see this harsh a ban if: they wanted to make a zero-tolerance example, or they thought he was doing it prior to a doping test to get the athlete's values down quickly.

Possibly. But this case is from last year – the ban being served from June 2019.
